'An Industry of Mediocrity': Study Criticizes Teacher-Education Programs | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
The effort to rank programs, by the National Council on Teacher Quality and "U.S. News & World Report," has been controversial since it started, in 2011.

Colleges of education are "an industry of mediocrity" that churns out unprepared teachers to work in the nation's elementary and secondary schools, according to a highly anticipated report.

The report, "Teacher Prep Review," describes the findings of a controversial effort to rate the quality of programs at 1,130 institutions nationwide that prepare about 99 percent of the nation's traditionally trained teachers.

James Jandebeur's curator insight, March 16, 9:59 AM

According to Facebook's news page, the service has 1.23 billion active users, a little over 20% of the population of the world. Twitter has around 200 million. These services, or something like them, have become increasingly important in our lives, influencing the news media and a variety of public decision making processes. Between a need for security and utility, we need to start learning, then teaching, then learning some more, how to best use social media, and classrooms are not the only place where this needs to be done.

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

So many students simply want the answer...no thinking involved, the easy way. We are doing our youth a tremendous injustice not emphasizing both the metacognitive and critical thinking processes. Why new technologies could never replace great teaching

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
Technology in education gets plenty of hype, but let's not forget the importance of teaching and learning, says Pamela Wright

So where do I stand as an educator, as a leader in education? The centre point of my passion is a philosophy that I instil into my staff, into the school and into every school I support. It is the child – first and foremost.

Teachers don't simply teach concepts and skills. Any new technology can do that.

Good teachers inspire our young people to be lifelong learners, creating a culture of independent enquiry with their enthusiasm and passion. I know this because I see it every day. Good teachers have the skills to know exactly how to get the best out of each and every young person in their care.

Howard Gardner: ‘Multiple intelligences’ are not ‘learning styles’

Howard Gardner: ‘Multiple intelligences’ are not ‘learning styles’ | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
The famed psychologist explains why one is not the other though they are often confused.

1.       Individualize your teaching as much as possible. Instead of “one size fits all,” learn as much as you can about each student, and teach each person in ways that they find comfortable and learn effectively. Of course this is easier to accomplish with smaller classes. But ‘apps’ make it possible to individualize for everyone.

Shafali Anand's comment, October 25, 2013 6:09 AM
Of course they aren't. They are the raw material that come together and result in learning styles. I've got to read this :)
Shafali Anand's comment, October 25, 2013 6:18 AM
Read it. I've always found Gardner's MI theory interesting - because it's a great equalizer - when I was growing up logical-mathematical intelligence (in Gardner's terminology) was given the highest importance - art, music, sports etc. were considered talents/gifts - and not intelligences. Gardner made them more respectable by calling them intelligences. This is why I too can call myself intelligent today - visually and spatially intelligent. Ahem!
