Protecting Students with Google Apps for Education | Privacy

Protecting Students with Google Apps for Education | Privacy | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

Posted by Bram Bout, Director, Google for Education

Today more than 30 million students, teachers and administrators globally rely on Google Apps for Education. Earning and keeping their trust drives our business forward. We know that trust is earned through protecting their privacy and providing the best security measures.

This is why, from day one, we turned off ads by default in Apps for Education services. Last year, we removed ads from Google Search for signed-in K-12 users altogether. So, if you’re a student logging in to your Apps for Education account at school or at home, when you navigate to Google.com, you will not see ads.

Race to Nowhere Trailer (Original)

"Theatrical Trailer Race to Nowhere: http://www.racetonowhere.com

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren't developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what's best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

In a grassroots sensation already feeding a groundswell for change, hundreds of theaters, schools and organizations nationwide are hosting community screenings during a six month campaign to screen the film nationwide. Tens of thousands of people are coming together, using the film as the centerpiece for raising awareness, radically changing the national dialogue on education and galvanizing change."...

Arizona State University, Claire McLaughlin's curator insight, January 27, 11:03 AM

If you have students requesting extra help with grammar, or who struggle with grammar and there is little time to teach isolated lessons, you may want to refer them to this free self-paced grammar program.

There might be differences between Canada and even within Canada. Alberta has good pay for teachers, but there is a lack of support. There are too many "talking heads" who have not been in the classroom or spent little time there who provide a toxic environment.

Lon Woodbury's curator insight, January 29, 3:40 PM

Teachers leaving the profession in large numbers is not a new problem.  I started teaching in the 1960s and left for some of the reasons listed here.  Some aspects have got better (salaries for example) but others (like parent support) have got much worse. -Lon

Critical Thinking - a look at some of the principles involved

This short video (5 minutes) provides a great overview on critical thinking. Some of the points made are: evaluate information and thought in a disciplined way, helping us refine our thought process; examine our biases; seek out knowledge and evidence; have an attitude of curiosity; widen our perspective; embrace skepticism, understanding claims, assumptions and biases; recognize the barrier of thinking in false dichotomies (black and white); and much more.

Looks more like a walk down an exhibit hall of vendors than skill/talent tied to teaching & learning.
Rod Murray's comment, February 13, 7:21 PM
If every teacher had this skill set, that would dramatically change teaching and learning. The "vendors" are, contrary to your suggestion, mostly free technologies that can and do change teaching and learning.
Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 19, 5:10 AM

These and many other tools are available. But if you are a teacher, what do you think? Is it really necessary to have all these skills? There is so much content readily available online and if you can organise to prepare materials in teams, or have access to a PLN on or offline, then you can share the load.

Some teachers and content creators have specific skills and their expertise can be used or accessed by anyone. Personally, I think it's good for teachers to be aware of the digital possibilities for their teaching context, but it is generally unrealistic for anyone to expect all teachers to become skilled in so many different areas.

Is it not better to pick fewer areas more relevant to you and focus on them? Be a master of a few areas useful to you, not a jack of all trades feeling stressed that you are master of none.
