Why replacing teachers with automated education lacks imagination

Why replacing teachers with automated education lacks imagination | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
We can do better than this impoverished view of the role of technology in education. The innovations that we need are ones that imagine creative new ways to organise education. They are ones that use technology to provide learners with opportunities for personal transformation.

What is the real value of homework?

What is the real value of homework? | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
homework assigned is not of very good quality, which could mean a lot of different things and absent more specificity sounds like a homework excuse. Another, better explanation is that practice doesn’t do much unless there is rapid feedback, and that’s usually absent at home.

Free Technology for Teachers: Stop Motion Studio Offers a Great Way to Make Videos

Free Technology for Teachers: Stop Motion Studio Offers a Great Way to Make Videos | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
Stop Motion Studio is a great app for creating stop motion videos. The app is available for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac operating systems. The basic (free) version of Stop Motion Studio lets you take as many pictures as you like and string them together in a sequence that plays back at a frame-per-second rate of your choosing. Each frame can be edited individually before you produce the final video. You can also add narration to your video in the basic version of the app. Completed projects can be saved to your device and from there you can share them on YouTube or on your favorite social network.

5 Ways to Help Students Affected by Generational Poverty

5 Ways to Help Students Affected by Generational Poverty | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
I work with students who are affected by generational poverty on a daily basis. I see many things. I see students whose shoes are held together by electrical tape. I see students who have perfect attendance because the only meals they receive are through the public school's cafeteria. I see pictures that students draw of their "pet rats" that live in their house. One thing I do not see a lot of is help for the educators trying to make a difference in these students' lives.

Why you think you're right -- even if you're wrong

Why you think you're right -- even if you're wrong | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it
Perspective is everything, especially when it comes to examining your beliefs. Are you a soldier, prone to defending your viewpoint at all costs -- or a scout, spurred by curiosity? Julia Galef examines the motivations behind these two mindsets and how they shape the way we interpret information, interweaved with a compelling history lesson from 19th-century France. When your steadfast opinions are tested, Galef asks: "What do you most yearn for? Do you yearn to defend your own beliefs or do you yearn to see the world as clearly as you possibly can?"
