Key findings include:

 

Teens are sharing more information about themselves on their social media profiles than they did when we last surveyed in 2006:

 

- 91% post a photo of themselves, up from 79% in 2006.

 

- 71% post their school name, up from 49%.

 

- 71% post the city or town where they live, up from 61%.

 

- 53% post their email address, up from 29%.

 

- 20% post their cell phone number, up from 2%.

The Facebook generation is fed up with Facebook. That's according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, which surveyed 802 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 last September to produce a 107-page report on their online habits.

Critical thinking and analytical thinking are not the same thing. To clarify the difference between these words, let's look at their etymology (word origins). According to the dictionary, "analyze" means to break apart into essential elements. The opposite of analyze is synthesize, or put together. "Criticize" means to evaluate or make a judgment regarding the merits or faults. The opposite of criticize in one sense would be praise, or in another sense absence of judgment. Simply looking at the two definitions, it is glaringly obvious that two different skill sets are required. So why are they often lumped together? The dictionary definition of this answer would be a stupor of thought, or the condition of not thinking.

There are many types of thinking! It's extremely important to first recognize a variety, whether through Multiple Intelligences, Bloom's Taxonomy or another lens. Then students need opportunities to practice, practice, practice.

"Having essential questions drive curriculum and learning has become core to many educators' instructional practices.  Grant Wiggins, in his work on Understanding By Design, describes an essential quetion as:  

A meaning of “essential” involves important questions that recur throughout one’s life. Such questions are broad in scope and timeless by nature. They are perpetually arguable – What is justice?  Is art a matter of taste or principles? How far should we tamper with our own biology and chemistry?  Is science compatible with religion? Is an author’s view privileged in determining the meaning of a text? We may arrive at or be helped to grasp understandings for these questions, but we soon learn that answers to them are invariably provisional..."

Why should we teach students to develop their own essential questions? Perhaps because they may be able to develop questions that are engaging and of interest to them. 
Gerstein explores this issue by sharing a variety of resources that look at question, including Jamie McKenzie who describes "what actually happens in most schools and classrooms in terms of questioning", Paul Harris who "argues that questions occupy a more central role than we realize in childhood cognitive development", and others.

In addition there is information on how to help students generate their own essential questions (additional information in the post):

* Begin a New Unit with Students Developing Questions

* Create a Taxonomy of Questions

* Ask Students to Create Questions as Homework

She also shares information on the QFT (Question Formulation Technique) which has six steps, beginning with "Teacher Design a Question Focus" and immediately moves to "Students Produce Questions" and then to "Students Improve Question" and finishes with "Students Reflect on What they have Learned." Not sure I like this idea as it shows how we are building on the past.  My preference would be to shift the paradigm to embrace a whole person educational orientation.  Your thoughts?  Should education be only about knowledge?
