Reflection on learning is beneficial, says this article based on empirical tests. Reflection here means "taking time after a lesson to synthesize, abstract, or articulate the important points".

 

Teaching or sharing the new knowledge with someone else was also tested and found to give the same benefit.

The pedagogical foundations of massive open online courses | David G. Glance, Martin Forsey & Miles Riley - First Monday

In 2011, the respective roles of higher education institutions and students worldwide were brought into question by the rise of the massive open online course (MOOC). MOOCs are defined by signature characteristics that include: lectures formatted as short videos combined with formative quizzes; automated assessment and/or peer and self–assessment and an online forum for peer support and discussion. Although not specifically designed to optimise learning, claims have been made that MOOCs are based on sound pedagogical foundations that are at the very least comparable with courses offered by universities in face–to–face mode. To validate this, we examined the literature for empirical evidence substantiating such claims. Although empirical evidence directly related to MOOCs was difficult to find, the evidence suggests that there is no reason to believe that MOOCs are any less effective a learning experience than their face–to–face counterparts. Indeed, in some aspects, they may actually improve learning outcomes.

What questions can we ask ourselves to assess our "pedagogical principles and instructional preferences"? Jackie Gerstein provides a list (and the list as a table as shown above) to help you reflect on your practice. As she states the process may be "simple but not easy." You may answer the question but how do you change your practice so that you may implement it in your classroom?

This title of this post states “simple but not easy” because to answer the questions is simple.  I know that every good teacher would answer these questions in the direction of student-centric education; one that is in the best interests of the student.  But implementation is another thing.  To implement the non-maintstream alternative is not easy given the accountability systems, one’s own training and background, and mandated school initiatives.  It takes a strong, self-directed and courageous educator to do so.

I think this is important - looking at the theories of education and found a different paper expounding Vygotskys Social Learning Theory.  There are more correlations here to how effective Group learning is.  Background to the theory.

Adult learning is a vast area of educational research and probably one of the most complicated. Adults learn differently and have different strategies in learning. Adults Learning Theory and Principles explain in details these strategies and sheds more light on how adults cultivate knowledge.

 Talking about adult learning brings us to the concept of Andragogy. According to the article Malcolm Knowles an American practitioner and theorist of adult education, defined andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn”. Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning as:Adults are internally motivated and self-directedAdults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiencesAdults are goal orientedAdults are relevancy orientedAdults are practicalAdult learners like to be respectedTom Whitby wrote this great article " Pedagogy Vs Andragogy " in which he argued for using these same principles of adults learning in kids learning. I highly recommend this article to those of you interested in learning more about Andragogy. I am also sharing with you this awesome chart created by floridatechnet.org  featuring the differences between pedagogy and Andragogy.

With my time now time divided between university classrooms and the commercial sector, this chart suggests both reason and hope. Higher education today promises job readiness but the customs, standards, and traditions of the education business make that an unlikely outcome. For example, the college students before whom I stand weekly are substantially more interested in, and learn from, my stories of client, employee, & vendor relations and conflict than what appears in their texts. Those stories get remembered and provide practical rather than traditionally academic reasons to learn. Most students learn critical thinking and other university-mandated disciplines when reasons for learning them become evident. But with life now operating on fast-forward in this era of the Internet, paradigm shifts, and the profit-challenged corporate sector, we no longer have the luxury of education's traditional and (perhaps) obsolete modalities. When we cater to students other than those who perceive college as permission to party for 4 (or more) years, eliminate the aggressive financial goals of the powerful dollar-starved multinational corporations to which we refer as "universities," when we acknowledge students must learn for the purpose of competing on a commercial world stage, we'll enjoy,nonce again, the goals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Simultaneously, we'll put our nation back on-track for renewed greatness.

If you use YouTube playlists, to organise and manage videos, you may wish to try out a new feature which will enable you to add intros and outros to  the videos in the playlist to " weave individual videos together into a bigger story"

 

You can create these either as recorded 'to camera' pieces using your built in webcam or as text intros, there are a number of different styles and background effects to choose from. There is also an option to add background music.

 

The tool can be found in your Playlist settings in the Video Manager, click: Edit Playlist to use.

 

If students are creating playlist this facility might help them to think crtically about the content and sequences in a playlist.
