Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions | 21st Century Tools for Teaching-People and Learners | Scoop.it

TeachThought.com has a series of posts about self-directed learning by Terry Heick and the staff, well worth a read! “

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:16 AM

It is interesting how few classroom teachers and administrators are aware of what self-directed learning is. SDL is an imperative for our children.

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 2013 8:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

Top 10 Sites for Curating the Web

Top 10 Sites for Curating the Web | 21st Century Tools for Teaching-People and Learners | Scoop.it

"With the amount of information that is available on the internet, it's important for teachers to filter through websites to find relevant information in a timely manner. As a blogger, I believe we "curate" the web automatically to help keep things organized and to convey information in as detailed and easy a way as possible.

Now, with the addition of dedicated websites, people can curate the web and save information on their own while sharing this vital information with others."

The 21st Century Curator

The 21st Century Curator | 21st Century Tools for Teaching-People and Learners | Scoop.it

Not surprisingly, curation has become the next buzzword after social business. With content coming at us with the force of a tsunami and the fury of a tornado, curators seem to have become our saviours—our sense making guide. One post out of five I have been reading in the past few months seem to be associated with curation or its close cousins—aggregation and filtering. Even as I read, I was tempted to apply some of the curation strategies and put together this post. I like to build some context around the links because—who knows—in the Internet world, a working link today can be a dead link tomorrow.

What kind of digital curator are you?

What kind of digital curator are you? | 21st Century Tools for Teaching-People and Learners | Scoop.it

This is an interesting workshop presentation given at #converge11 by Joyce Seitzinger. It has a focus on curation in EduTech but is generic as well in a lot of aspects.

In particular, I love the distinction she makes from slide 22 onward between all types of "curators": a fun way of showing what curation best practices should be all about.

I've been exploring the idea of 'the social media classroom' and how I view teachers with an emerging role as curators, but also teaching student the skills of curation so they can get the right resources in an age of ubiquitous information. I'll have to keep in touch.

To Get the Most Out of Tablets, Use Smart Curation

To Get the Most Out of Tablets, Use Smart Curation | 21st Century Tools for Teaching-People and Learners | Scoop.it
How might efforts to curate benefit from the portability and ubiquity of mobile devices? Tools like Evernote and GoodReads allow for easy and valuable curation. But the harder questions are pedagogical and curricular.
