Engage Students with Web 2.0 Writing Activities

Engage Students with Web 2.0 Writing Activities | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

Looking for some neat ways to get your students excited—or even interested—in writing? Then be sure to check out the Writing with Web 2.0 Tools workshop I facilitated earlier this week at Techapalooza 2013.

From bell ringers to digital storytelling to exit tickets, this resource not only includes 20+ “cool tools” that can be used to inspire, motivate and/or engage students in the writing process, but it also includes corresponding examples and classroom integration ideas for every phase of the BDA (Before—During—After) cycle. Yep, it’s like a one stop shop for teacher-tested ideas related to integrating technology into writing activities in any content area spanning the K-12 curriculum.

As technology moves along words that were once part of the lexicon may become endangered as new technology takes over. How many students know what a floppy disk is or have 'dialed' a phone? This infographic has looked at vocabulary and places words in the following categories:

* Endangered words

* Words with updated meanings

* Social media and messaging

* Tech terminology of the future

Check out the poster and see if you agree or disagree with the choices. What would your students think? Are there words they would add or delete? This could become a fun activity and perhaps you could create your own infographic.

Using Technology as an Effective Teaching Tool

Using Technology as an Effective Teaching Tool | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

With the advancement of technology, teachers now have some really great education tools for the classroom, online teaching tools and lesson plans for students. Some are moving towards a “paperless” classroom. While it doesn’t seem feasible to make a classroom completely paperless, it’s a concept that technology is quickly helping to become a reality.

YouTube is the 3rd largest social media site on the planet. And its activity makes up about 20% of all social media activity.

YouTube is also the web’s 2nd most popular search engine — behind parent company Google!

Just in time for back-to-school!

Using our Canvas LMS, I also utilize the survey feature to obtain feedback after the first four night classes. There are five questions that help inform my teaching:

  1. The class met all stated learning objectives on the agenda.
  2. The learning exercises in this class supported the learning objectives
  3. The class provoked me to think about the topic in a new way.
  4. This class gave me practical information that I can use "as is" or adapt and use as a student or future teacher.
  5. What questions do you still have?

This app wonderwheel is developed for students on the autism spectrum by an Apple educator Mark Coppin whom is also the Director of Assistive Technology at the Anne Carlsen Center. The wheel is split into six sections that define common learning expectations. Each of the sections then shows common learning traits, followed by app categories and then the apps (each of which is hot linked at the website). The six categories are:

* Behavior

* Communication

* Social Skills

* Need for Sameness or Routine

* Sensory Sensitivity

* Difficulty with Traditional Learning Methods

The link you to the chapter that discusses Assistive Technology. To go directly to the App Wonderwheel use this link http://www.autismhandbook.org/images/4/4c/Appwheel.pdf.

It is often difficult to know which apps to choose when we work with students. This resource may help you determine some apps to investigate for students on the autism spectrum.
