Seth's Blog: What happens to privacy?

Seth's Blog: What happens to privacy? | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it
People don't care about privacy as much as they care about being surprised. Most people have used credit cards for decades—giving the credit card company tons of intimate data about their habits. We go to doctors and therapists and tell...

The outrage over privacy leaks and snooping is largely because it comes as a surprise. It's not what we signed up for and not what we expected. As marketers and governments continue to intrude, though, less privacy will become the new normal.

Ask any teenager... few of them are particularly surprised or upset that they're leaving a trail online, it's always been that way for them.

5 Pinterest-like education sites worth trying out | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

All of these sites focus on learning and curation, but could one of them really be the "Pinterest of education"?

As one of the fastest-growing social networks, Pinterest's popularity can be attributed to its ease of use and vibrant Pinboards. Recently, a number of similar social curation sites developed specifically for students and teachers have popped up, emulating Pinterest in key ways while focusing on learning. In some cases, they have even made improvements.

Here are five such sites that could be contenders for the title "Pinterest of Education".

Don't Confuse Technology With Teaching

Don't Confuse Technology With Teaching | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

Though universities are rushing to embrace online courses, true education requires one mind engaging with another.

Educators are coaches, personal trainers in intellectual fitness. The value we add to the media extravaganza is like the value the trainer adds to the gym or the coach adds to the equipment. We provide individualized instruction in how to evaluate and make use of information and ideas, teaching people how to think for themselves.

Just as coaching requires individual attention, education, at its core, requires one mind engaging with another, in real time: listening, understanding, correcting, modeling, suggesting, prodding, denying, affirming, and critiquing thoughts and their expression.

EdTech "vs." IT

EdTech "vs." IT | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

Unfortunately, the "EdTech vs. IT" mindset is all too prevalent in many organizations.  Operational IT looks down disdainfully on their users from an ivory tower, viewing them as "threats" to be carefully controlled and monitored.

Teachers view the IT department as a bunch of out of touch control freaks who hinder rather than facilitate their work. As a former teacher, I have seen it from both sides.

This sad situation is wrong on many levels.

===> The relationship between IT and users should be a partnership, not a boxing match! <===

Get Over It!

Get Over It! | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it
There are, no doubt,  many technophobes (among educators and in general) out there. Technophobia is defined by The Free Dictionary as: Fear of or aversion to technology, especially computers and high technology.

===> Just as our students… the most important skill we can learn, support, develop and prioritize is Learning How to Learn <===

Schools need to have/put platforms into place, that support their educators in developing, exploring and experiences new kinds of learning that they will then be able to take beyond their own professional development and learning into the classrooms.

You need to EXPERIENCE through technology in order to see HOW you can translate that into your teaching!

How Matchmaking Technology Can Help Reduce Teacher Turnover - The Huffington Post

In fact,30 percent of new teachers quit before three years and almost 50 percent quit before five years.

The biggest reason for leaving? Nope, not pay. It's a little more complex than that. The biggest reason for leaving was the culture.

It was satisfaction with working conditions, which included relationships with colleagues, quality of professional development, quality of the curriculum, building conditions, etc.

EdCanvas is a web service which allows you to search, find, clip and collect any kind of content, from text to video clips and to organize it into visual boards for educational and learning purposes.

Differently than Pinterest, EdCanvas is specifically targeted at the education world and at schools and teachers, and it makes possible not just to collect "images" from web pages, but to collect and organize whichever content elements you want, including full web pages.

EdCanvas boards also offer the ability to easily reposition each item in the collection according to your preferences and it provides a number of pre-set layout options for displaying content in your boards.

The strongest feature for EdCanvas is an integrated search engine, which allows you to search for images, websites, video clips across Google, YouTube and Flickr, and lets you grab and drop any relevant result into anyone of your collections. Furthermore Edcanvas can connect directly to your Dropbox or Google Drive giving you access to all of your personal library files.

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools | 21st Century Technology Integration | Scoop.it

The U.S. National Archives Experience Digital Vaults (pictured above) offers students a good introduction to discovering and working with primary source materials. Rather than turning kids loose on millions of records in the National Archives, Digital Vaults focuses on a curated collection of 1,200 items.

Within the site, there are activities designed to help students discover important connections between primary sources. One section, Pathways Challenges, provides quizzes that ask kids to analyze a specific resource and then find the related document within the collection. Teachers and students can create their own quizzes or take advantage of the premade challenges.

Students who create free Digital Vaults accounts can collect primary source documents and images and use them to create digital posters and videos within the available templates.
