Unbored: The Power of 'Making' in the Classroom

Unbored: The Power of 'Making' in the Classroom | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it
The idea of "learning by doing" stretches back to education legends Maria Montessori and John Dewey, both of whom felt teachers should act more as guides to students' independent discoveries than as founts of information.
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

How many times a day do you hear "I'm bored"? My aim is more about inspiration and motivation rather than just plain English lessons. College students have had eleven years being told what to do and how to do it - they now have to learn and work independently or collaboratively to be workplace ready.

Ofsted | Promoting enterprise in vocational courses for 16-19-year-old students in colleges

Ofsted | Promoting enterprise in vocational courses for 16-19-year-old students in colleges | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Linda Buckmaster: I have tried and failed many times to involve students and vocational colleagues in the promotion of enterprise skills; embedding English and maths.  It is refreshing to hear that Ofsted now endorses the development of such skills.  Ofsted state that:

" ..The further education sector has a major role in helping foster an enterprise culture. This good practice report presents the key factors in the successful promotion of enterprise-related skills and entrepreneurial capability in 15 high-performing colleges. It explores the strengths of curriculum provision and leadership and management that result in the successful development of students’ enterprise-related skills and entrepreneurial capability..."

Good report from Ofsted on enterprise http://t.co/eJeioJT5 Its focus is 16-19 in colleges, but is useful for all post 16 providers.

A Principal's Reflections: The Right Way is Your Way

A Principal's Reflections: The Right Way is Your Way | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

If you asked me two years ago about Social Media I would not have recommended using it as an educator or in the classroom! But my attitude changed after setting some SM goals for myself to join up a couple of sites, start a blog, post an article etc.   I experimented with  several SM sites where I found some to be more useful than others.   Two years later I now have my own website and a member of most SM sites.  I use some sites more than others and don't feel that I need to be fully active on ALL of the SMs; currently Twitter and Pinterest work for best for me.  It's all about common sense as an educator and preference as to what works for you!

The Innovative Educator: Start the New Year with a new way to look at students who don't seem to care

The Innovative Educator: Start the New Year with a new way to look at students who don't seem to care | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it

"My students don't know how to learn.  They don't know how to succeed.  And, it doesn't seem like they care to change any of that. " -Crystal Kirch, My biggest struggle this year.

"High school math teacher Crystal Kirch’s biggest struggle of 2012 was met with both cheers from those who could commiserate as well as jeers from those who were concerned that students were not the culprit, but rather the victims of a system that set them up for failure."

Via Beth Dichter
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

An interesting and topical article - which camp are you?.  I believe that children are passionate about the things THEY want to learn about and need to know why they are learning a particular topic. There are multiple ways a person learns; which one is the "right" way? Experiment; there are many different styles in one class - get to know each individual and speak on a 1:1 basis regularly.  Design your programme around each student (differentiate and individualise) and offer choice of resources etc.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, January 2, 2013 11:18 PM

What happens when we close ourselves off from hearing a different point of view? In this post Lisa Nielsen takes a look at reactions that occurred in response to the post by Crystal Kirch. She divides the responses into two sections:

* Reactions from those frustrated by children who don't want to learn

* Reactions from those who provided the alternate perspective (that Kirch referred to as 'an "intense attack") in defense of children

By looking through the lenses of other this post is asking us to "think about and learn from that which may not be so comfortable and look at our students who don't seem to care in a new way."

Engaging Students Through Social Media: Real World Experience, Creativity...

Engaging Students Through Social Media: Real World Experience, Creativity... | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it

Linda Buckmaster: Social media is not going away, and can be used productively, rather than prohibiting usage on campus. We are preparing students for the workplace and they need to know how to use social media as an important tool, rather than a distraction.  Lecturers should find ways to integrate social media into the classroom to build future professional skills.

Social media has become an essential part of most people’s everyday lives, from checking Facebook and Twitter to posting blogs, Pinterest listings, and uploading YouTube videos. However, and with smartphones making it easier than ever to spend time on social media networks, in what ways can these networks be leveraged to engage and build a foundation for future student learning? While the potential of distraction is there, the right social media teaching strategies can lead to creative learning, and a productive approach to making social media part of ongoing professional development.
