Teaching to the Test: Does Standardized Testing Help or Harm Students?

Teaching to the Test: Does Standardized Testing Help or Harm Students?  | 21st Century Teaching & Learning Resources | Scoop.it
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

"There's no secret about the test. It's a standards-based test. We teach to the test." – School District Superintendent Art Revueltas

This infographic highlights one of the biggest points of concern from teachers (USA) of the idea of "teaching to the test".  An investigation was carried about the value placed on standardised testing by requirements such as No Child Left Behind, the desperation to achieve (or appear to achieve) based on these standards, and how factors such as race and income affect performance.

The report concluded that minorities and low-income students were at a higher risk for being held back or put in remedial programs based on standardised testing.  The report also found that white, middle and upper-income students often benefit, moving ahead and landing in gifted programmes.

Linda Buckmaster's insight:

Blooms Taxonomy was developed in 1956 and was used to help classify the difficulty associated with questions asked during assessments.  The model was based around the idea that learning can be divided into three main areas:

  • Cognitive Domain
  • Attitude Domain
  • Skills Domain

Blooms and gaming together provide an individual learning type that has a series of learning levels to be considered when providing serious game platforms for learners.

Linda Buckmaster's insight:

There is so much talk about the future of education- what will  it look like, what should we teach, should we teach, should we content curate, should we guide… the topics are endless.

But it is universally agreed that students need to be able to think. They need ideas.  What will education look like in the future? Will we be able to contain it?

We don’t know the answer; Mia illustrates her vision of  future of education…

Linda Buckmaster's insight:

Rather than trying to design, create, deliver or even “control” what happens  within class , teachers need for a focus on “building the new personal and social capabilities” that are are going to be required by the new “connected workers”, in order for them to work and learn effectively in the digitally connected workplace.

What is the definition of digital citizenship?

Via enrique rubio royo
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

As with literacy and numeracy which provides skills to ' participate in the work force, digital literacy has become an essential skill to be a confident, connected, and actively involved life long learner.'

There should be time set aside to throughout the year for students to learn how to act appropriately while using the net.
There are several activities and resources to help you do that with them; which I shall post on this site over the next few days. .

Students love to play games, and games have the potential of teaching 21st century skills. This video discusses why games work and provides a look at a number of games and skills that they teach students. Key to this is the need for the teacher to help the students transfer the knowledge they are learning in the games to other areas. The video is short (under 5 minutes) and may provide you with some new information.
