“Competency-based education (CBE) awards academic credit based on mastery of clearly defined competencies. CBE replaces the conventional model in which time is fixed and learning is variable with a model in which the time is variable and the learning is fixed.

Measuring learning by competency is not new, but various challenges facing higher education, combined with new models and technologies, have brought a new focus on CBE.


A growing number of competency-based programs have been developed at all levels of instruction. CBE capitalizes on the potential of online learning, enabling new models that can reduce both the cost and time needed to earn credentials while better preparing students for their professional lives.”

Slatebox lets you create mind maps and infographics easily and without registration. If you want to work in a small team, register and invite collaborators (up to 3).

The tool is free and if you work on your own, you do not even need to register. Great for using with students as the tool does not require any previous experience.

At the outset, I think we need to get rid of the terms teach and teacher from our lexicon and start talking about the ‘learning leader’. It immediately changes the focus from teacher-centred to learner-centred approaches. So, I think what we used to call teaching is really leadership and the broad abilities are similar whether or not you are leading students or leading people in an organisation.

I have always promoted a blending of teacher-centered and student-centered to a "guided learning-centered" approach. This can then achieve a more balanced learning leaders perspective for all stakeholders.

I think the confusion between a course on an LMS and a MOOC—especially now that MOOCs are all set to enter the workplace where course tracking has so far been the norm—is going to be rampant. Hence, it is essential to identify the key aspects of what makes a MOOC a MOOC.

Critical thinking isn't an entirely natural process; it's one that requires courage.

 

For educators, as a term critical thinking is similar to words like democracy, global, and organic: You hear people use them all the time, but no one seems to understand what they mean.

 

This kind of etymological opacity lends itself to them being misused, fumbled awkwardly, and abused. Over the long term, such abuse empties it of meaning until we all either throw it around casually in the middle of an overly complex sentence to bolster our own credibility, or avoid the term altogether.

The online comments to Weimer’s blog post (2014) made me think more about how we as instructors need to be careful to bridge instructivist and constructivist teaching approaches for students not yet familiar with taking responsibility for their own learning (Venkatesh et al 2013).

I enjoy experimental education, "the art of teaching and learning without a net". My Thai Business English undergraduate students enjoy the experience too. This semester our journey takes on project-based learning, you may say; been there, done that, but in Asian culture most universities still use teacher centered (spoon feeding, rote memorization, grammar-translation methods) when teaching.

 

You should have seen their eyes open when I informed them of the first project. I introduce the objectives, provided some free resources and told them to make their way. The projects are based on the students interest (using inquiry-based learning) in this project by conducting a business survey in both English and Thai then presenting the research results in a infographic....the class was  just a buzz with creativity, communication, code switching and genuine excitement of the authentic learning experience...

"Students tend to develop either performance-related goals or mastery goals...Their rewards arise from the challenges of acquiring and applying new knowledge and skills". This is an example of the assessment trends moving away from traditional "mindset" to assessment being applied within the 21st Century teaching and learning environments.

"Financial aid should be used to support students who most need assistance, not to reward those who are good test takers," said Meredith Twombly, Hampshire's dean of admissions and financial aid.

We have to move past tests that can not determine lifelong learning outcomes. Congratulations to Hampshire College for the forward thinking and moving into the 21st Century teaching and learning environments. Assessments should not become a barrier for continued lifelong learning.


I would like to add this as a warning to other schools who continue to  use this socio-class based testing (SAT,ACT, GRE, GMAT, LMAT) as a barrier to higher education...Their are more poor working class people than their are rich.

 

For society to continue "moving forward" education is the key.  Needs based and on-line blended as well as competency based learning will become bigger, self sufficient with "open access to all socio-classes of lifelong learners"... so lead, follow or get out of the way.

We are learning more and more about who enrolls in Massive Open Online Classes (MOOCs) and how those students behave.  For example, Harvard and MIT recently released de-identified data from their first 16 MOOCs that ran in 2012-2013 (read more about the Harvard and MIT data setshere and access the actual data here).  

 

The data set includes several variables relating to student activities – for example, whether students visited the course website, watched videos, or completed exams.  These types of measures can tell us a lot about what students do, but it is not clear how much they learned as a result of those actions
