School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | 21st Century Teacher Librarians and School Libraries | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.

All types of libraries -- school, public, and academic -- form a library ecosystem that provides and supports lifelong learning. Funding cuts to school libraries have an impact on public and academic libraries as students lack essential information literacy skills. Public and academic libraries have to adjust their core services to accommodate the need" (Karen Bonanno)

Libraries can be great places. They are human spaces with adults who help children in schools. It is more than the books, but they are important as well. They let us travel in our imagination.

Good school-based example of promoting the role and impact of the teacher librarian in one school - great use of the voice of the school leadership and classroom teachers describing the work of the TL. I like the way the TL is silent in this video clip - all we see from the TL is ACTION not words.

This could be used as a model for other school communities to capture the role, value and impact their TL.
