Originally Twitter was not created to be a social media site, but it blew up as such. There is close to three hundred million active users today. There is great potential there, but most just use it as social media. A lot of people have a hard time understanding Twitter due to the fact that a user can only type out one hundred and forty characters in one tweet. The potential this has is amazing. Unlike other sites such as Facebook, a company can give a quick little bit about their business then give out the link instead of overloading them with a bunch of information. There are seven working memory spaces in the human brain, many are filled with things such as ‘chew gum’, ‘scroll down’, ‘listen to wife’, etc. If a company puts out a post with too much ‘stuff’ it is likely that a lot will be forgotten or the viewer might not even continue to read. Twitter cuts down on the ‘stuff’ and helps get a snippet of information and a link to go if the viewer wanted to know more. From clicking the link the viewer then can subscribe to the website, join an e-mail list, etc. We live in a fast pace, technological world. Unless going out and seeking information, people do not want to be overloaded with too much information, especially since most of the time people are on their cell phones using Twitter and other social media sites. It would be in a company’s best interest to learn how to use a tool such as Twitter and learn that sometimes less is more.
