When you think of a librarian, what image comes to mind? Photographer Kyle Cassidy ventured to the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia in January to explore that question. In between networking, educational events, and panels, librarians from across the country stopped by Cassidy’s makeshift studio to sit for...
As education technology has evolved, so, too, have the kinds of digital tools that school librarians use with their students. More than 750 school librarians responded to SLJ’s survey, representing K–12 public and private schools across the country.
Librarians are a key component of helping organize the world's information. Despite search engine's making it much easier to access information, librarians will still be a critical component to organizing the internet's taxonomy.
Amanda Lucas's insight:
Powerful arguments for the role of librarians in a digital age where their skills are more important than ever. Students who regularly visit well resourced and well staffed school libraries achieve better academic results.
Nearly 50 per cent of Victorians belong to a library, but now these community hubs are in danger of losing state funding.
Amanda Lucas's insight:
Victorian public libraries in an era of funding cuts. User stats confirm the high usage of public libraries. 48% of Victorians are public library users; 51 million books were borrowed in 2011/2012 and 300,000 eBooks downloaded last financial year, a huge leap from 19,000 the previous year.
There is a new digital divide on the horizon. It is not based around who has devices and who does not, but instead the new digital divide will be based around students who know how to effectively find and curate information and those who do not.
The Colorado School Library Survey is administered each year by the Library Research Service, an office of the Colorado State Library. Surveys are sent to traditional K-12 public educational institutions. Statewide estimates are produced by weighting survey data to reflect the universe of school libraries in Colorado. Survey responses are totals based on results from the school library staff who participated in the survey. This report highlights results from the 2013-14 Colorado School Library Survey. The library profession has strong evidence that students in schools with good school libraries learn more, achieve academic standards, and score higher on standardized tests than students in schools without school libraries and librarians. Jeffrey Schnapp is on a mission to save libraries. As the director of both the Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the metaLab (at) Harvard, he normally spends his days grappling with the urgent questions of the wired world, but right now, his most pressing concern is more concrete. In a world that is rapidly digitizing, what will become of physical libraries — and their material soul, books? Last summer, Harvard University implemented its “Harvard Library Transition,” a massive and elaborate administrative restructuring to bring the world’s largest university library into the 21st century. In response to the Library Transition at Harvard, Schnapp created the Library Test Kitchen, a laboratory class in the Graduate School of Design.
The Wikipedia Library is an open research hub started in 2010 when Credo Reference donated 500 free research accounts to Wikipedia's most active editors. Partnerships with HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, and the Cochrane Library followed. Now, the Wikipedia Library is developing into a portal to connect editors with libraries, open access resources, paywalled databases, digital reference tools, and research experts. Two of the project's leaders discuss the potential for collaboration between libraries and Wikipedia, as well as the new Visiting Scholars pilot program.
