The government has cancelled all tenders for the laptop project after bidders quoted more money than the budgeted amount.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Thursday, Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof Jacob Kaimenyi said three firms that met the technical specification quoted astronomical figures, almost three times the budget.

Rwanda's Digital Lesson

As the government plans to roll out its ambitious free-laptops for primary school pupils next year, children in Rwanda have enjoyed a similar programme for the last five years. Rwanda is the third Country in the world to embrace the use of laptops in schools after Peru and Uruguay. This is what triggered 26 members of the Parliamentary Committee on Education to visit Rwanda to familiarize themselves with how that country has implemented the laptops-for-schools project. And as Brenda Cheruiyot reports even pupils in schools located in far flung villages in Rwanda know how to use laptops.

A form four student from Murang’a County has managed to produce hydro-electric power using locally available materials.

John Magiro Wangari, 21, from Mihuti Secondary School in Mathioya has amazed his teachers, students and neighbours by using materials including old bicycle parts to produce the power.

Government cancels laptop tender

The ministry of education has decided to terminate the laptop project tender due to a Ksh 20b budget deficit. The tender process that attracted 20 bids began in august of this year. However of the three bidders that met the ministry's specifications, the lowest cost 32 billion well above the 12 billion budget the govt set aside to procure the 1.3 million laptops.

Training curriculum for the laptop project already in place

The first batch of trainers for the ICT integration program have began their instructional courses, ahead of the countrywide laptop rollout next year. The 150 Master Trainers, will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to effectively train teachers across all the 47 counties.
