Single Parenthood: Teachers Seek Revision Of School Curriculum

Family, by definition, comprises of a father, a mother, and children. At least in theory as written in text books in Kenya's school curriculum. But as family dynamics change and such family structures as those of single parents become more common, early childhood education experts as well as teachers are seeking to have the curriculum changed to incorporate such societal dynamics. Is it time to rewrite the text on family? Peter Maina, Jamal Harsam, Levi Wekesa and Maurice Mwanzia of Kenya’s University of Nairobi have launched the UoN Business Review, a local version of the popular Harvard Business Review.

Though not related in any way to the HBR, UONBR will be “a meeting place for students, university dons and business leaders who are keen on sharpening their business acumen and keep abreast of latest developments”

Backed by the university’s Marketing Students Association, the team says it “will create value for you by collecting articles on business related topics from professors, business leaders and students. ”

Most maps use the “Mercator projection.” That’s good if you’re sailing somewhere. It’s bad if you’re trying to figure out how big, say, Africa is. On the Mercator projection, Africa looks to be about the same size as Greenland.

The African business community is adopting the use of mobile devices very rapidly. This is the main conclusion drawn from the survey conducted by the Africa Business Panel. 1776 African business professionals did participate in the survey.

The survey demonstrates that only 67 percent of Africa business professionals are using a desktop, versus 94 percent using laptops. The tablet, a relatively new mobile innovation, is already adopted by 47 percent of the African business world. 76 percent use a smartphone, which is more than the use of the classic mobile phone (64%). 9 percent possess both a private and a company smartphone.

Your college major has a bigger effect on your income than where you go to college.

We reported on this story last month, and ran a graph of the most and least lucrative college majors.

But the graph, based on research out of Georgetown, was limited to people who had only a bachelor's degree. People with graduate degrees were excluded from the data.

We were curious: How much would the picture change if you included all college grads — those with graduate degrees as well as those with bachelor's degrees alone?
