48 Critical Thinking Questions For Any Content Area | 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it

"...critical thinking is more than understanding something — it involves evaluation, critiquing, and a depth of knowledge that surpasses the subject itself and expands outward. It requires problem-solving, creativity, rationalization, and a refusal to accept things at face value.

It’s a willingness and ability to question everything."

Jim Lerman's insight:

A great list for use in nearly any situation requiring analysis.

Why It’s Critical for the Next Gen to Be Tech Creators Not Consumers

Why It’s Critical for the Next Gen to Be Tech Creators Not Consumers | 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it
ACCORDING TO AYAH Bdeir, technology is the language of our time. The 33-year-old founder and CEO of littleBits likes to compare the engineers of today to the clergy of the Middle Ages, who controlled access to knowledge and power via their monopoly over the use and understanding of the written word. Today’s engineers have a special kind of social and technological influence, which derives from their understanding of the stuff that makes our everyday gadgets work. If our lives today depend on technology, then those who truly understand it have an outsized influence over the rest of us.

Bdeir states “My mission with littleBits is to equip a new generation of confident and creative problem-solvers,” she says. “Once kids are tech-literate, they’re prepared to take on any challenges that emerge. Rather than adapting to the technology that comes at them, they’ll adapt the technology to their own needs. It’s just a matter of changing their attitude.” I love it!

Sphero Edu + Swift Playgrounds – Sphero Edu – Medium

Sphero Edu + Swift Playgrounds – Sphero Edu – Medium | 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it
At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in 2016, Apple announced Swift Playgrounds, a revolutionary app for the iPad that makes learning the Swift language interactive and fun for all learners. Swift Playgrounds is essentially a video game that teaches kids how to code using Apple’s Swift programming language. The interface allows you see what you’re creating with code as you write it — type your code on the left and immediately see the result on the right. Earlier in 2017, the Sphero Edu team partnered with Apple to build the first integrated Playground content designed to control real world robots. On June 5th at WWDC, Apple unveiled the new content that is now part of the Swift Playgrounds app. Thanks to our new partnership, you can now program real world robots including Sphero’s very own SPRK+.

A Simple Guide to Design Learning - STEM JOBS

A Simple Guide to Design Learning - STEM JOBS | 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it
Doris Wells-Papanek of www.designlearning.us published an article in “Innovation Journal” in which she said “Design is to doing as learning is to thinking.” Learning, Wells-Papnek explains, prepares students to think, and design enables them to do. The goal of design learning is to help students become great problem solvers as they progress through the steps of the design learning framework, challenged to be creative but mindful of the task put before them.

Coding, Robotics and the Jobs of the Future

Coding, Robotics and the Jobs of the Future | 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it
Since as early as the 1800’s, fears of robots taking over human jobs has been a reality. As we enter the true age of robotics, those concerns are resurfacing, and educators are unsure about what jobs their students will be competing for. For example, IT jobs will grow by 22% through 2020 and jobs in STEM are said to see similar growth. Educators are expected to equip their students with skills that will translate into careers and yet they have no idea what these skills should be. While timeless skills such as critical thinking, languages and mathematics aid in every career they do not provide the specialized skills that “jobs of the future” may require. So, what are the jobs of the future and how can be best prepare students for them?
