Research is beginning to have us question where we put our attention as a society, questioning what we should care about. If we want to avoid any kind of derailing, perhaps it's time we all paid more attention to sleep.

(From the article): A leader’s daily struggle is to remain focused on our most important things. The challenge is just how do you stay focused on what’s important? Like many of us Benjamin Franklin found it difficult to stay focused. Especially when we’re bombarded every day with an overwhelming number of distracting tasks, external pressures and conflicting priorities.

Why Leaders Should Focus on Employee Investment, not Engagement

Why Leaders Should Focus on Employee Investment, not Engagement | 21st Century Leadership | Scoop.it

The modern workplace is a collection of new technologies, new business strategies, and new leadership methodologies… and the same staggering number of disengaged employees.

What was once an emerging trend is now a full-blown problem that costs US businesses an estimated $450 to $550 billion each year. However, the cost of poor employee engagement is hardly confined to a monetary figure.

Disengaged employees are unhappy and unmotivated. They pass on opportunities to develop as professionals, learn new skills, share ideas, and collaborate with teammates. Careers are derailed. Dreams are dissolved. A person’s excitement in being hired by a great company in a role they’ve always desired — which in many cases takes years of hard work and difficult life decisions — can vanish quickly in the face of a demeaning manager or an unresponsive, unappreciative company.

Great article by Kristi Hedges on the role of leadership development. Love her insights.

Amy Melendez's curator insight, September 26, 10:23 AM

From the article:

#5: Clear and honest program rationale.

Finally, we also have to be courageous about the reason for the leadership program in the first place. If there’s a serious deficit that needs to be addressed, it’s better to be honest about it. If high performers are being put into a program to escalate promotion, then be clear about that. If the program is meant to top-grade skills for current positions, that’s fine too.

Everyone is well meaning, and this can get in the way. Too often, companies disguise, or don’t know, the real reason for the program. They worry about setting incorrect expectations. Just because a senior leader wants it doesn’t make a program meaningful. Greater transparency about why participants are selected and what the program will lead to is critical. Otherwise, there’s widespread skepticism and even frustration which foils learning every time.

Leading with the Heart— and a Dash of Emotional Intelligence

Leading with the Heart— and a Dash of Emotional Intelligence | 21st Century Leadership | Scoop.it

..."Manage your own behavior first. Many managers try to control others’ behavior by being coercive, manipulative or demanding. Martin o'neon's curator insight, January 8, 2013 10:06 AM

Why do most managers and executives have trouble "coaching" their teams to higher levels of peformance? Why is it that so few companies spend NOTHING on training managers and executives how to coach, inspire, delegate, assign, and give feedback?

Everyone pays lipservice to the idea of leading/managing teams, but so few companies put their resources behind the concept of being a great place to work because of the quality of the leadership/management.

We seem to have taken the "heart" out of leading/managing and it's become a very sterile environment that just doesn't work. Trust comes from the heart, and if you're not leading, managing, coaching from that perspective, your team will NEVER trust you!

The #1 Rule of Leadership - "It's not about you"

The #1 Rule of Leadership - "It's not about you" | 21st Century Leadership | Scoop.it

Perform a search of “leadership” on Google and you will find dozens of listed leadership “rules” and “qualities” (most of which are very accurate).

But there is one primary axiom of leadership that trumps all others:

Via donhornsby, Amy Melendez
more...
donhornsby's curator insight, August 27, 5:25 PM

(From the article) The most effective leaders follow Leadership Rule #1, and return to it during those leadership challenges that require the very best of their leadership abilities. They understand that you cannot change expectations, alter perceptions, and motivate others unless you maintain the ability to influence them in a positive manner. When followers sense that your leadership decisions are made with other priorities, they will not trust you. Without trust, you will lose the ability maintain the positive influence necessary to motivate and inspire others, and you will have limited the value of your leadership investment.

Whether you are a brand new leader, or someone with years of experience, the next time you find yourself faced with a leadership decision, pause and remind yourself of this:

“It’s not about you.”
