Joseph Folkman and Jack Zenger compiled a dataset in which they asked 332,860 bosses, peers, and subordinates what skills have the greatest impact on a leader’s success in the position the respondents currently hold. Each respondent selected the top four competencies out of a list of 16 that were provided. They then compared the results for managers at different levels.

For any given company, the larger the company becomes, the more opportunities emerge to screw it up. 

 

Another obvious but not well-understood law:

 

The more screwed up your company, the more people will complain about it and blame you.

 

If we take these two together, it is easy to see that without intervention, the larger your company becomes, the more people will complain and blame you.

Far too many small business owners, operate their businesses without ever preparing a business plan, and this missing link is often the chief reason they do not achieve their desired levels of success.


A business plan is not all that difficult to create, yet many business owners avoid the task, often because they are aware that a well prepared plan can expose gaps of many kinds that cannot always be ignored.


This excellent article, suggests that a business plan clearly identifies how much work lies ahead for a business to succeed in its chosen endeavour and provides a prioritised map of the path to follow, and it offers a six question approach that will provide all the answers needed to help a business owner to prepare a simple business plan.
