Simple Leadership

Simple Leadership | 21st Century Leadership | Scoop.it
The more complicated you try to make leadership the more complicated it will be to lead. Some people like to make leadership really really complicated. I think they do that in order to put "leaders"...

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, April 25, 2014 3:07 PM

Simple leadership is all about people. When we put people i.e. teachers and students first, we find we ask questions about their "whoness" and not "whatness". It is a little Dr. Seuss-like, but people are not disposable and replaceable widgets in a mechanistic ordering. They come as historical and forming beings, not doings.

Simple leadership gets the complexity of putting people first.

Michael Binzer's curator insight, April 26, 2014 7:02 AM

Storytelling is the key to any delivery. Great stories trump content any day. Get off the bench and out there and find your stories to engage your team to higher performance.

Matthew Farmer's curator insight, January 27, 1:53 AM

Powerful stories are told with conviction and the most powerful are often told on the basis of personal experience.

Learning to articulate your powerful personal learning experiences as stories will not only help you to reflect on your learning and therefore make it more powerful, but also help you share your learning with others and influence them to take action.  Leadership indeed!

James Hutchison's curator insight, Today, 11:01 AM

Of course you reach people by telling stories - it's how we make sense out of life - you can give the theory but you have to provide real world examples and that's why we have stories. Stories help us understand life. But if you tell a story to teach a moral I would suggest that unless you live by that story's moral lesson it doesn't matter how many stories you tell - nobody will believe you. Telling a good story is one thing but having integrity is another.

Brian Fanzo shares his secrets: the influencer known for talking fast and tweeting even faster has an impressive list of tools for creating, curating, distributing and showcasing content that reflects his personal brand and - more importantly - his voice. As he puts it, a fundamental step before building your personal brand is defining your voice and your story.

What I note in this article is the above extract which almost sounds like a confession. If you've ever met Brian, you know he's full of energy and passion and... he's not afraid to talk. Yet, even he admits that creating content can be overwhelming before making a strong case for content curation as a way to build your personal brand.

Great Leaders...make everything Great...

Patricia D. Sadar - Leadership Strength Coach's curator insight, January 17, 8:18 AM

I love research that supports what most of us have seen for ourselves.  There is such a strong ROI on investing in leadership talent.  I was just having this conversation yesterday with an executive.

I believe that leaders are alot like computers.  Just like our computers, we need to make sure that we invest a significant amount of time and money into making sure that we have the most updated software and virus protection for our leaders.  Most leaders are running off of programming from years ago...Isn't it time to reboot, get the viruses out, and update our programming so that we can be aligned with the organization's network (goals), communicate more effectively, and work more efficiently.

As leaders when we stop learning we stop growing.  If that happens, what happens to our teams?

---If you have any questions, comments, or best practices about leadership…I am on it!  My goal is to share thoughts, tools, and inspiration to help you leverage your strengths, and help your teams do the same!  Walt Disney said, "Whatever we have accomplished has been because other people have helped  us."  So don't be afraid to ask for help...that is what I am here for!

Until next time...PS - Live on Purpose!

Roy Sheneman, PhD's insight:

Leaders need to consider what really matters and resist the urge to get involved in actions that sound good, but have little or no effect.

Don Dea's curator insight, January 12, 12:52 AM
  • Solving problems effectively. The process that precedes decision making is problem solving, when information is gathered, analyzed, and considered. This is deceptively difficult to get right, yet it is a key input into decision making for major issues (such as M&A) as well as daily ones (such as how to handle a team dispute).
  • Operating with a strong results orientation. Leadership is about not only developing and communicating a vision and setting objectives but also following through to achieve results. Leaders with a strong results orientation tend to emphasize the importance of efficiency and productivity and to prioritize the highest-value work.
Light Core's curator insight, January 25, 5:18 PM
