The Leader Who Wasn't There

The prevailing story is that we have more distractions, more information and more decisions pressing our lives than ever before. Our attention span is shrinking; as little as 20 seconds according to some experts. Leaders in many organizations are stretched to breaking; juggling meetings, emails, inquiries and issues. As we manage the task in front of us we are already considering the next or perhaps mulling over a more complex issue that awaits our attention.

This frantic mental traffic puts us into a sort of trance. We see without seeing. We listen without hearing. We are here but not present. We may be in the room but our mind is in some faraway place or time.

So what does this mean in practical terms?

Being present is a choice. As Nigel Risner says "when you're in the room, be in the room."

(From the article): Humility essentially means that a leader is modest about his or her position in the rank, and refrains from adopting the management style of a power-hungry megalomaniac. A good leader is able to allow others to lead with him, because they know how to balance confidence and humility. Instead of feeding his or her ego with the power and authority that comes with the function, a great leader is able to blend in and set a rhythm for the whole company to follow.

When was the last time you took a positive decision to take a good look at your organisation?  We’re not talking here about changing a job title in response to the latest government missive on pay or restructuring a department in the light of technology developments.  Changes of that nature go on all the time in organisations but they are reactive rather than creative.  What we are thinking of here is deliberately taking time out to have a good hard look at the organisation and its culture.

Many years ago, I was lecturing about success to a group of bright kids at a junior high school. I asked, “Who can tell me what ‘resolve’ means?” Several hands went up, and I did get some pretty good definitions. But the last was the best. A shy girl from the back of the room got up and said with quiet intensity, “I think resolve means promising yourself you will never give up.” That’s it! That’s the best definition I’ve ever heard: Promise yourself you’ll never give up.

Employees will demand the right to choose who they work for, which tribes they join and which products they associate with. I'm familiar with some of these models, but certainly not all of them.  There are a few other models that are not on the list.  I think the message here is that there are different leadership models for different situations.  


Whilst these models are all useful, don't get sucked into thinking that all models will work all the time.  Don't drown in buzzwords, concepts, famous names and complex theories...be prepared to step back, think about your team, your environment, your own skill set - and develop an approach that works for you.
