New research by Dr. Leanne ten Brinke at the Haas School of Business suggests that, while most of us have pretty good instincts when it comes to recognizing liars, we hesitate to call out lying in professional environments because we feel guilty for being suspicious. Calling someone a liar for no good reason is a frightening proposition for most.

Dr. ten Brinke’s research points to objective, well-documented physiological and behavioral changes - or “tells” - that we can use to make accurate assessments of other people’s truthfulness. Both her work and that of Dr. William Ury (Harvard) in Getting to Yes, can help us recognize autonomic behaviors in others and ourselves, in order to increase our truthfulness. Here are seven “tells” that may indicate someone is lying:

To ensure that his team is always in tune and aligned with a common approach to drive strategic vision, Amazon.com Inc.’s CEO Jeff Bezos created a corporate book club; he requires his team to read books curated by himself. Leaders like Bezos understand how the absence of structured knowledge sharing creates room for unproductive discussions, silos and lack of genuine commitment to the execution effort.

So how DOES organisational culture get passed on (or transmitted)?

It is an important question that does not get the attention it deserves. The corporate world is familiar with measures of organisational culture and engagement. Most of Australia’s largest companies have at some point pulled in an external research company to give them a picture of their current organisational culture. Some do it religiously every year to track changes.

These measures are helpful and paint a rich story of the cultural norms that exist. What happens after the report has come out is the sticky bit. Many a large company has received “this years culture score” and the response is somewhat predictable. There are rounds of workshops, pie charts and circumflexes are pawed over, some people get bonuses other lose them and then HR are left holding the baby of “improve the culture”.

Some companies make great use of the data and use it to transform – but others end up thinking “I KNOW this…but what do I DO about it?”. The real question they are asking is: How did we get here and how is the culture continuously transmitted onwards?

Thankfully the fields of sociology, anthropology and psychology have been asking this question for decades. If you start looking harder you find that the famous philosopher – and one of the earliest psychologists – William James was asking this question in the 1850s. Even Charles Darwin himself strayed from naturalism into culture and pondered the way in which his principles of natural selection apply to cultural norms.

All over the world, leaders are using coaching to gain a competitive edge. But does coaching solve every problem one might encounter in the workplace?

“No. It’s not a panacea,” says coaching expert Patricia Overland in an article for Chief Learning Officer. “Determining when coaching is a good investment can be challenging.”

Overland shares a couple of examples from her experience when a leader may not be ready to learn and apply coaching skills. Overland explains that offering coaching without addressing these underlying beliefs is usually a recipe for failure.

You are not a leader only because of your knowledge or skill. You also have others to bring along with you, so they grow and blossom to support the goals of the organization. Be sure you don’t take for granted what it takes to grow great employees. If necessary, create your own development plan so you will become a superior grower. By the way, farmers who grow seasonal crops don’t take it easy in the autumn and winter. What do you do after the harvest to prepare for the next round?

I was just having a discussion with an old friend about the lost art of communication. People have a hard time communicating. Both the spoken and the written word are highly valuable life skills to master. Public speakers and writers spend a lifetime honing their craft. Individuals seem to give up on their communication skills or simply be careless.

This article provides some useful suggestions and a book recommendation on the topic of improving conversations. Conversation truly is an art form that is specific to the individual or audience addressed. A lifetime may not be enough to master the art of communication but it is important to always keep improving our skills in this area as the quality of our lives often depend on it.
