Immer wieder wird darüber gerätselt, ob der Fortschritt in Sachen Robotik irgendwann das Aus für die Menschheit bedeuten wird. Selbst der renommierte Physiker Stephen Hawking warnt vor „Killer-Robotern“.

Die Robotik ermöglicht es mittlerweile sogar, dass gelähmte Menschen wieder gehen können.


Forscher an der University of California arbeiten bereits seit fünf Jahren an einem Robo-Exoskelett, das nun fast Marktreife erreicht hat. Der Anzug, mit dem Namen „Phoenix“, ist laut den Entwicklern sehr leicht und modular aufgebaut. Abgesehen davon soll Phoenix auch einigermaßen erschwinglich sein – zumindest im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Apparaturen. Manche sehen Phoenix sogar schon als den Rollstuhl der Zukunft, der es gelähmten Personen ermöglicht, kleine, aber stabile Schritte zu machen.

WHEN YOU COMBINE robots and cheetahs with military funding, you’re bound to end up with something incredible. Robotics engineers from MIT have spent over five years developing a battery-powered quadruped robot capable of running as fast as a human being. And now they’ve trained that robot to jump over hurdles—autonomously.

In a video released today, the team from MIT shows off their DARPA-funded, four-legged harbinger of terror approaching and clearing obstacles up to 18 inches tall while maintaing an average speed of 5 mph. The 70-lb robot (roughly the same weight as a female cheetah) estimates the height, size, and distance of objects in its path, and adjusts its approach to prepare a jump and safe landing—all without slowing down.

The world's first hotel staffed entirely by robots is set to open in Japan later this year, promoted with the slogan "a commitment for evolution".

The Henn-na Hotel will open in the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki Prefecture in July with the hope that by employing "actroid androids" - robots that mimic humans - it will be able to significantly reduce costs.


"Actroid androids" will mimic human behaviour like breathing, blinking and making eye contact.(Huis Ten Bosch)

10 robots will staff the 72-room hotel, capable of cleaning rooms, transporting luggage and greeting guests at the hotel's reception. Rooms will range in price from ¥7,000 (£39) to ¥14,000 (£77).

Here we see IHMC Robotics performing a simple maneuver with an ATLAS robot where the programmers sent a single footstep plan to the humanoid. Using its onboard sensors and artificial balance, ATLAS is able to repeatedly climb up and down a small pile of cinderblocks without tumbling. It's a task even a toddler could handle, and ATLAS is roughly on the same development cycle. Except that toddlers aren't physically capable of picking up said cinderblocks and throwing them around a room[IHMC Robotics via IEEE Spectrum]

Paraplégique depuis plus de 11 ans suite à une chute en BMX, Steven Sanchez est aujourd’hui l’un des premiers utilisateurs du tout nouvel exosquelette Phoenix conçu par la start-up californienne SuitX basée à Berkeley.

Deux fois moins cher que son concurrent principal nommé ReWalk, l’exosquelette Phoenix se distingue également par ses meilleures performances et son faible encombrement. Assurant le maintien des membres inférieurs de son propriétaire, celui-ci peut alors se déplacer debout à l’aide de béquilles à une vitesse d’environ 2 km/h et ainsi offrir la sensation de remarcher à son utilisateur.
