A new system developed at Oregon State University to improve cancer surgery uses a nanoparticle called a dendrimer to carry a drug into cancer cells, that can set the stage for improved surgery and also phototherapy. (Graphic courtesy of Oregon State University)


Technology such as this, scientists said, may have a promising future in the identification and surgical removal of malignant tumors, as well as using near-infrared light therapies that can kill remaining cancer cells, both by mild heating of them and generating reactive oxygen species that can also kill them.

Nanotechnology researchers produce new anti-cancer drug from turmeric


The compound is made of curcumin found in the extract of turmeric, and has desirable physical and chemical stability and prevents the proliferation of cancer cells.In this drug, curcumin with high efficiency (approximately 87%) was loaded in the polymeric nanocarrier, and it created a spherical structure with the size of 140 nm.

The drug has high physical and chemical stability. The drug was used successfully in laboratory conditions in the treatment of a type of aggressive tumor in the central nervous system, called glioblastoma (GBM).

New drugs offer cancer patients hope

Pioneering immunotherapy drugs could soon be offering new hope to patients with hard-to-treat advanced cancers.


These are important results because they extend the potential for therapy to situations where there is minimal or no tumour present," Dr Giordano said.

The new nivolumab data showed two-year survival for heavily pre-treated melanoma with almost half of patients responding to treatment.

More than half of non-small cell lung cancer patients previously treated with three or more therapies also survived two years after receiving the drug.

Up to 71 per cent of patients with advanced kidney cancer who had previously been treated with drugs that target tumour blood vessels lived a year with the treatment.

All were "end-of-the-line" patients who had been given only weeks or months to live.

A University of Texas at Arlington physicist working to create a luminescent nanoparticle to use in security-related radiation detection may have instead happened upon an advance in photodynamic cancer therapy.Wei Chen, professor of physics and co-director of UT Arlington’s Center for Security Advances Via Applied Nanotechnology, was testing a copper-cysteamine complex created in his lab when he discovered unexplained decreases in its luminescence, or light emitting power, over a time-lapse exposure to X-rays.

Looking further, he found that the nanoparticles, called Cu-Cy, were losing energy as they emitted singlet oxygen – a toxic byproduct that is used to damage cancer cells in photodynamic therapy.
