Technology such as this, scientists said, may have a promising future in the identification and surgical removal of malignant tumors, as well as using near-infrared light therapies that can kill remaining cancer cells, both by mild heating of them and generating reactive oxygen species that can also kill them.

Biomedical engineering researchers have developed a nanotechnology anti-cancer drug delivery method that essentially smuggles the drug into a cancer cell before triggering its release ("Enhanced Anticancer Efficacy by ATP-Mediated Liposomal Drug Delivery"). The method can be likened to keeping a cancer-killing bomb and its detonator separate until they are inside a cancer cell, where they then combine to destroy the cell.

Nanotechnology researchers produce new anti-cancer drug from turmeric


The compound is made of curcumin found in the extract of turmeric, and has desirable physical and chemical stability and prevents the proliferation of cancer cells.In this drug, curcumin with high efficiency (approximately 87%) was loaded in the polymeric nanocarrier, and it created a spherical structure with the size of 140 nm.

The drug has high physical and chemical stability. The drug was used successfully in laboratory conditions in the treatment of a type of aggressive tumor in the central nervous system, called glioblastoma (GBM).

Un nouveau biogel injectable s'avère efficace pour livrer des agents anticancer directement dans les tumeurs cancéreuses et les tuer. Cette technologie conçue par des chercheurs du Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) a été testée avec succès en laboratoire. Si elle fonctionne chez les patients, cette gélatine thérapeutique pourrait un jour révolutionner les traitements contre plusieurs formes de cancer.


Contrairement au «jello», ce biogel est liquide à température de la pièce et se gélifie à 37 degrés Celsius, la température du corps humain. «La force de ce biogel est d'être compatible avec les cellules immunitaires anticancer. Il sert à les encapsuler pour les administrer à l'aide d'une seringue ou d'un cathéter dans la tumeur ou juste à côté. Au lieu d'injecter ces cellules anticancer ou encore des médicaments dans tout le corps à travers la circulation sanguine, nous pouvons traiter localement le cancer. Nous espérons que cette approche ciblée va améliorer les traitements d'immunothérapie actuels», explique Réjean Lapointe, chercheur au CRCHUM et co-auteur d'une étude parue récemment dans la revue Biomaterials.
