Army researchers use 3D printers for rapid prototypes

Researchers at the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command's chemical and biological center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland use computers, lasers and 3D printers every day. The US Navy has announced that it is moving ahead with plans to deploy the first ever combat laser weapon. Late this summer, USS Ponce -- a fairly unextraordinary amphibious ship -- will be outfitted with the Laser Weapon System (LaWS).

LaWS will be put through some at-sea testing in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf, after which it will be capable of shooting down drones or disabling small attack boats (including suicide bombing missions) at an energy cost of just $1 per shot. Rather fittingly for a futuristic weapons system, LaWS will be fired using a 'video game-like controller.'

A laser-seeking, self-steering bullet flies through the air, rendered visible by a glowing LED ensconced in its tip. No, it's not that the US military suddenly wants its enemies to see its bullets coming. Instead, its developers needed to test the weapon's in-flight steering electronics, to prove they can cope with the shock of being fired.

 

The fact the LED stayed brightly lit means that the in-bullet circuits did indeed remain unbroken.
