From electrons to ions
Simply put, the memristor could mean the end of electronics as we know it and the beginning of a new era called "ionics".

The transistor, developed in 1947, is the main component of computer chips. It functions using a flow of electrons, whereas the memristor couples the electrons with ions, or electrically charged atoms.

In a transistor, once the flow of electrons is interrupted by, say, cutting the power, all information is lost. But a memristor can remember the amount of charge that was flowing through it, and much like a memory stick it will retain the data even when the power is turned off.

This can pave the way for computers that will instantly turn on and off like a light bulb and never lose data: the RAM, or memory, will no longer be erased when the machine is turned off, without the need to save anything to hard drives as with current technology.

But memristors have another fundamental difference compared with transistors: they can escape the boundaries of binary code.

As if the original version of Boston Dynamics' ATLAS robot wasn't unsettling enough, ahead of the upcoming DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals in June about 75 percent of the robot has been redesigned and rebuilt to make it stronger, faster, quieter, and less encumbered by cables thanks to a battery-filled backpack that will now keep it powered during the upcoming trials.

For years now, scientists have been trying to develop microscopic robots that can swim through bodily fluids and repair damaged cells or deliver medicine. Now, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany believe they've got the perfect design -- in the form of scallops so small, they can barely be seen by the naked eye. These micro-robo-scallops move back and forth to swim through blood, eyeball fluids and other liquids inside our body. The scientists believe mimicking the way a true scallop swims is ideal, due to a number of reasons.

This sure is a terrific little drone. While still in the development stage, I hope it becomes a commercial success.  You wear and went you want to take a drone photo.  Take it off, throw it out there, it flies off, takes the photo and comes back to you.  Or you can have the  Nixie drone follow you around and take some photo snaps.  Terrific.

Here we see IHMC Robotics performing a simple maneuver with an ATLAS robot where the programmers sent a single footstep plan to the humanoid. Using its onboard sensors and artificial balance, ATLAS is able to repeatedly climb up and down a small pile of cinderblocks without tumbling. It's a task even a toddler could handle, and ATLAS is roughly on the same development cycle. Except that toddlers aren't physically capable of picking up said cinderblocks and throwing them around a room[IHMC Robotics via IEEE Spectrum]
