Nanorobotic agents open the blood-brain barrier, offering hope for new brain treatments

Nanorobotic agents open the blood-brain barrier, offering hope for new brain treatments | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
(Nanowerk News) Magnetic nanoparticles can open the blood-brain barrier and deliver molecules directly to the brain, say researchers from the University of Montreal, Polytechnique Montréal, and CHU Sainte-Justine ("Remote control of the permeability of the blood–brain barrier by magnetic heating of nanoparticles: A proof of concept for brain drug delivery"). This barrier runs inside almost all vessels in the brain and protects it from elements circulating in the blood that may be toxic to the brain.

The research is important as currently 98% of therapeutic molecules are also unable to cross the blood-brain barrier.
“The barrier is temporary opened at a desired location for approximately 2 hours by a small elevation of the temperature generated by the nanoparticles when exposed to a radio-frequency field,” explained first author and co-inventor Seyed Nasrollah Tabatabaei. “Our tests revealed that this technique is not associated with any inflammation of the brain.

Net neutrality becomes the law of the land

Net neutrality becomes the law of the land | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted today to accept FCC chairman Tom Wheeler's proposal that the Commission "use its Title II authority to implement and enforce open Internet protections." Or, to put it in plain English, your ISP must provide equal broadband access to you or any site -- Amazon, Netflix, etc. -- without slowing down or speeding up sites for additional fees.

So, what will this mean for you? Wheeler declared that this new stance "will ensure the Internet remains open, now and in the future, for all Americans." We'll see. As Mark Cuban, serial entrepreneur, said on CNBC, "Let the lawsuits begin."

The internet should be protected from at least a little corporate greed, and this is a good start. Having to pay more for decent speed would be a disaster for those of us who make some, if not all, of our income from working online!

Leslie G Perry's curator insight, February 28, 11:21 PM

I'm developing a unit for students on considering the ethical issues in technology. This story is definitely one for students to consider. What is the right of humans to have free and open access to the internet? How would things be different if the rich had priority access to the net?

Sir Alexander Graham Bell may be better known as the guy who invented the first ‘practical’ telephone, but the Scottish scientist laid claim to an arsenal of additional innovations.

Among these were the photophone, a wireless telephone of sorts that enabled sounds (including speech) to be transmitted via light. It’s said that Bell actually valued the photophone more than the telephone from his lifetime achievements, even though it never quite took off and is now consigned to the footnotes of history.
