India's Lunar Rover Detects Sulfur at Moon's South Pole

India's Lunar Rover Detects Sulfur at Moon's South Pole  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Data from LIBS revealed the lunar regolith near the south pole has the expected mix of aluminum, calcium, chromium, iron, manganese, oxygen, titanium, and silicon. The detection of sulfur, however, was a welcome surprise. On Earth, traces of sulfur are found in water, soil, and plants. Sulfur is associated with water, and that's one of the primary resources for which Chandrayaan-3 is searching.

Nokia wins NASA contract to put a 4G network on the moon | #Space

Nokia wins NASA contract to put a 4G network on the moon | #Space | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Soon, astronauts on moon missions won't have any excuse for not answering their texts.

NASA has awarded Nokia of America $14.1 million to deploy a cellular network on the moon. The freaking moon. The grant is part of $370 million worth of contracts signed under NASA's "Tipping Point" selections, meant to advance research and development for space exploration.

Nokia's plan is to build a 4G/LTE network, and eventually transition to 5G (just like the rest of us). It will be "the first LTE/4G communications system in space," according to NASA's announcement.

"The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds, and provide more reliability than current standards," the announcement also reads.

China and Europe's 'Moon village' could boost lunar mining, space tourism | #Space

China and Europe's 'Moon village' could boost lunar mining, space tourism | #Space | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Chinese and European space agencies have come together to consider the possibility of a new joint base on the Moon.

Representatives from both groups, China's space agency and the European Space Agency (ESA) have begun discussing collaborative projects including the moonbase alongside other joint schemes, and as China continues to grow in the space exploration arena, a human outpost could benefit both parties.

Intriguing moon water source found in glass beads from impacts | #Moon #Space

March 27 (Reuters) - Glass beads spawned in violent impacts from space rocks on the lunar surface have been found to have water trapped inside, offering what scientists describe as a potential reservoir of this precious resource for future human activities on the moon.

Scientists said on Monday an analysis of lunar soil samples retrieved in 2020 during China's robotic Chang'e-5 mission showed that these spheres of glass - rock melted and cooled - created in the impacts bore within them water molecules formed through the action of the solar wind on the moon's surface.

NASA finds ice on the surface of the moon | #Space #STEM

NASA finds ice on the surface of the moon | #Space #STEM | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

There is definitely -- definitely -- ice on the moon.

Scientists have long believed that water ice could exist in the ever-dark recesses at the moon's poles and that belief has finally been confirmed in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Aug. 20.

The lunar poles are not exposed to sunlight, leaving them dark and incredibly cold -- well below freezing. In fact, the temperatures within these areas were usually in excess of -260 degrees Fahrenheit. In the past, scientists have found indirect evidence that the south pole may harbour surface ice, but there was the chance that these observations were due to other phenomena.

Water on the moon: It's been there all along

"The surprise discovery of this work is that in lunar rocks, even in nominally water-free minerals such as plagioclase feldspar, the water content can be detected," said Zhang, James R. O'Neil Collegiate Professor of Geological Sciences."It's not 'liquid' water that was measured during these studies but hydroxyl groups distributed within the mineral grain," said Notre Dame's Hui. "We are able to detect those hydroxyl groups in the crystalline structure of the Apollo samples.
