Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Get Smart by Texting w/ @Text_Engine

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Get Smart by Texting w/ @Text_Engine | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
Text Engine was developed to offer cell phone users a means to search the web using their text messaging service. This is great news for educators and students in low-income and rural communities.

And that's a good thing, because while smartphones are popular, there is still a great need for text-only services in low-income and rural districts. There is also a need in districts like NYC that empower students to bring their own devices to school, but don't have the means to enable students to connect to the internet.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Think of the text capabilities of your phone as a search engine in your pocket?   Great tool and concept.

Charlotte Walters's curator insight, April 11, 2014 8:24 AM

Hello, Year 9!

Here is an excellent resource regarding questions that a critical thinker asks whilst reading. I believe this will be incredibly useful for you as you develop your chapter summary for chapter four of The Outsiders which is due at the end of this week. Remember - you can present your chapter summary in any way you wish - a story board, a mind map, a Prezi, a short multimedia presentation, whatever takes your fancy.

As a critical thinker, you will need to develop the skills to read between the lines of what the author (in this case, S. E. Hinton) is describing through the text. This infographic provides you with some questions to help you get into the role of a critical thinker, and get you started on your project.

Libraries Loaning iPads

Libraries Loaning iPads | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Includes samples of library policies and samples of general apps loanded on iPads

"A few weeks ago I sent out an email to MEDLIB-L asking for librarians who are circulating iPads to contact me off list to answer some questions. I was really killing about 3 birds with one stone. Not only did iMedicalApps want me to write a story about libraries loaning iPads, but I wanted to investigate the idea for our library, and I wanted to share the information for others on this blog.

A lot of librarians got back to me and I want to thank everyone who responded."

Educade | Lesson Plans | CREATE A NARRATIVE-DRIVEN SCAVENGER HUNT WITH AURASMA

Educade | Lesson Plans | CREATE A NARRATIVE-DRIVEN SCAVENGER HUNT WITH AURASMA | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
Aurasma can encourage learners to go beyond the classroom to connect and enhance what they learn by pulling resources from the physical and the digital and then sharing those augmented reality scenes with others.

Learning Objectives:

  • Write a multi-part fictional narrative that logically ties in with actual locations on the school campus.
  • Create an engaging narrative experience for the reader through expressive and provocative narration, animation, and/or images.
  • Evaluate and deconstruct the narratives of others through class-wide discussion and reflection of own narrative.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Ah the things we can do with mobile phones and big net tech. A project using Aurasma could make your school year sing.

The curation comment is interesting... I think it's fantastic that students are able to gain these skills without the assistance of a teacher, but ultimately if they veer off the path or have been misguided, they will always need a facilitator to not only show students the tools but also give them some best practice ideas.
