Spark 154 – The Myth of the Digital Native + other quality podcasts | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Here you will find multiple quality podcasts. I call your attention to The Myth of the Digital Native in particular. ~ Dennis

-------

Summer is over and Spark is back for our 5th season! This week we give education a reboot, debunk the myth of the digital native, and look at the intersection of art, memory, and math in a memorial for September 11th.

"It’s easy to assume that anyone under the age of 25 is “tech savvy”, but it turns out that’s not entirely true. A new study of undergrads suggests that these so-called “digital natives” are not so digitally minded after all. Nora speaks with Andrew Asher, the lead anthropologist on the Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries Project, as well as Eszter Hargittai who has researched differentials in how much young people know about tech. (Runs: 12:28)"

ERIAL Project

ERIAL Project | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

The current research from ERIAL tells us that college students really don't know how to search very well.  (No surprise there!) ~ Dennis

The Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries (ERIAL) Project is a two-year study of the student research process. The project is funded by an LSTA grant awarded to Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) by the Illinois State Library. The goal of the project is to understand how students do research, and how relationships between students, teaching faculty and librarians shape that process. ERIAL is also an applied study—that is, research pursued with the purpose of uncovering, understanding and addressing social problems. As such, its goal is to use the results to develop more user-centered library services.

Do school librarians have "enduring values?" - Home - Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Doug Johnson is always interesting!

Just as technology was starting to have a major impact on libraries, long-time academic librarian and past ALA president Michael Gorman identified these as enduring central or "core" values of librarianship (Gorman, 2000):

Stewardship
Service
Intellectual Freedom
Rationalism
Literacy and learning
Equity of access to recorded knowledge and information
Privacy
Democracy

Are these core values still held by practicing school librarians? Are there other common central beliefs that define us as librarians? When I describe my own professional core values as a librarian, I include:

Citeology - Projects - Autodesk Research | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Visualizing data by graphing the interconnections between reseach citations is a fascinating concept. This Autodesk Research project gives us a glimpse of how citations and research might work in a graphic oriented environment. ~ Dennis

-------------

Citeology looks at the relationship between research publications through their use of citations. The names of each of the 3,502 papers published at the CHI and UIST Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conferences between 1982 and 2010 are listed by year and sorted with the most cited papers in the middle. In total, 11,699 citations were made from one article to another within this collection. These citations are represented by the curved lines in the graphic, linking each paper to those that it referenced.

Libraries Make Room For 'Hackerspaces' : NPR

As information becomes more and more digital, public libraries are striving to redefine their roles. A small number are working to create "hackerspaces," where do-it-yourselfers share sophisticated tools as well as expertise.

Hacking the Library?  It's about time. ~ Dennis

---------------

What is the Harvard Library Innovation Laboratory?

We are a small group within the Harvard University Library system that implements in software ideas about how libraries can be ever more valuable.

What do you do?

We hack libraries...in the good sense of discovering and delivering more capability and value.

Can you be a little more specific?

We work in three broad areas:

1. We think in public.
2. We build software that demonstrates how libraries can bring yet more value to scholars and researchers.
3. We amplify our effect by eagerly partnering with other groups with similar passions.

MediaBugs is a service for correcting errors and problems in media coverage.

The journalism industry ships lemons every day. Our newsrooms have a massive quality control problem. If wherever we encountered new information, sentence by sentence, frame by frame, we could easily know the best thinking on it.

If we had confidence that this represented the combined wisdom of the most informed people--not as anointed by editors, but as weighed over time by our peers, objectively, statistically and transparently.
If this created a powerful incentive for people to ensure that their works met a higher standard, and made it perceptibly harder to spread information that didn't meet that standard.

These goals are possible with today's technologies.
They are the objectives of Hypothes.is.
