Why teach search?

Google understands the importance of finding the right information at the right time. We create tools to let you find the information you need, of the kind you need, when you need it. In most cases, a simple search works really well. But for more specialized questions, a bit of instruction in how to search improves all searcher--from middle school students to trained professionals--and lets you discover and use more, higher quality sources than ever before.

The Pros and Cons of Speed Reading | Edudemic

The Pros and Cons of Speed Reading | Edudemic | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Advocates of speed reading claim that by using their methods, readers can zip through hundreds of pages worth of information, with great comprehension, in only a matter of minutes. Sound too good to be true? Like many things that promise great rewards with little effort, speed reading isn’t quite the amazing practice it claims to be and may actually make things more difficult when comprehension counts (like for college courses or at work). Read on to learn more about speed reading, and get a little insight into the reality of what it can and can’t do for your reading abilities.

Visual Search Engines | 3D PERSPECTIVES | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

If a picture is worth a thousand words, visualizing your search results can significantly improve your ability to find relevant information. One of the challenges in today’s information universe is to find relevant results.Instead of a long list of titles, URLs, Part and Document Numbers, visual search engines deliver rich results presentations, often visually connected to related search terms.

Are libraries resisting open source? | opensource.com | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

My husband and I are librarians. We were talking recently about library training, the library profession, the open source movement, and how open source digital content is being distributed today in public libraries. We were struck by the way that open source thinking has infiltrated many areas—but not yet the profession or institution of librarians.

Why Most People Say They’re Addicted to the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC]| The Committed Sardine | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

How does one define Internet addiction? It might all come down to perception, after all, but consider this: According to this article in Mashable.com, over half of Internet users actually confess to feeling thier use of it is within the realm of addiction. And maybe they're right. After all, it's tempting, always available, immensely satisfying, it changes the chemistry of our brains significantly, and we absolutely can't imagine living without it. Sounds like an addiction to me.

Visualize This: The FlowingData Guide to Design, Visualization and Statistics | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

There are lots of books on visualization that describe best practices and design concepts, but what do you do when it comes time for you to actually make something?
If you don't know how to use the software in front of you, the abstract isn't all that useful. And with growing amounts of data, it's becoming more important to be able to make sense of and communicate with it all.

In his new book, Visualize This, Nathan Yau teaches you how to create graphics that tell stories with real data, and you'll have fun in the process. Learn to make statistical graphics in R, design in Illustrator, and create interactive graphics in JavaScript and Flash & Actionscript.

Yau draws from his experience as a graduate student in statistics and his work with major news organizations for an engaging, data-first approach. After all, visualization is about the data it's based on...

Call for Papers for School Libraries Worldwide - the only peer reviewed journal on school librarianship | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

International Perspectives on School Library Education: From Face to
Face to Distance Education (Volume 18, Number 2, July 2012)

This issue of School Libraries Worldwide will center on the theme of International Perspectives on School Library Education: From Face to Face to Distance Education. In the ten years since the last SLW issue on school library education (see volume 6, number 2), much has happened to the profession of school librarianship and the way in which education programs are delivered. For this issue, we encourage papers that explore how changes in the profession as well as in education delivery systems have influenced school library education programs.

School Libraries Worldwide also welcomes submissions of excellent research on any topic relating to school librarianship for the open portion of the journal.

Deadline for submissions of full papers: April 15, 2012.

Authors interested in contributing to this issue should contact the guest editors, Allison G. Kaplan at agkaplan@wisc.edu
or Gail Dickinson at GDickins@odu.edu

Please see IASL web site for complete information about submitting a paper for this
issue: http://www.iasl-online.org/pubs/slw/slw_call.html

Reference: Advanced Operators for Web Search - GoogleWebSearchEducation | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
Here, in one place, are all of the currently documented advanced search operators for web search. Note that Scholar, Groups, etc. may have some unique operators listed elsewhere. Also note that some operators come in pairs (e.g., allinanchor along with inanchor: ). We’ve written about them together rather than having two entries for the same kind of operator. Also, we followed the square brackets convention where a query is surrounded by square brackets. When doing the query, you wouldn’t actually use the square brackets in your query. (Although it won’t hurt anything either...)

More information is available than most people can imagine. That's nothing new. Librarians have always shown people how to find it, evaluate it, and use it. Finding particular information and knowing how to evaluate its reliability is as difficult as ever.
