Free Tools to Incorporate Game-Based Learning

Free Tools to Incorporate Game-Based Learning | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

As I work with teachers to implement game-based learning (GBL), they are always looking for any free tools that exist. While some are willing to pay for iPad game apps or using the Kinect, these tools often cost money. Luckily, there are many tools out there that are free and that teachers could use in the classroom as soon as tomorrow. Some of these tools are not only the games themselves, but also lesson plans and ideas for using the game in the classroom. Here are some of my favorite free GBL tools.

Libraries Make Room For 'Hackerspaces' : NPR

As information becomes more and more digital, public libraries are striving to redefine their roles. A small number are working to create "hackerspaces," where do-it-yourselfers share sophisticated tools as well as expertise.

There's a tasty keyword combo in this piece: "interventionist librarianship"  It didn't take me where I expected, but I eventuall found what I was looking for.  ~ Dennis, my thought has been provoked and it makes me smile.

Hacking the Library?  It's about time. ~ Dennis

---------------

What is the Harvard Library Innovation Laboratory?

We are a small group within the Harvard University Library system that implements in software ideas about how libraries can be ever more valuable.

What do you do?

We hack libraries...in the good sense of discovering and delivering more capability and value.

Can you be a little more specific?

We work in three broad areas:

1. We think in public.
2. We build software that demonstrates how libraries can bring yet more value to scholars and researchers.
3. We amplify our effect by eagerly partnering with other groups with similar passions.

Nora and David discussed two projects the lab is working on, both related to metadata – information about information – and how it impacts the ways we find and navigate knowledge.
