Get the most from 21CIF: Lots to see inside!

Get the most from 21CIF: Lots to see inside! | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

You've arrived at the tip of the iceberg. There's a tremendous amount of free content, helpful resources and ideas on this site for improving the array of 21st Century Skills we call information fluency (others call it information literacy). To help you find what you need, here are a few tips for effectively using this site.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

It may be ironic that it takes significant search skills to find the wealth of information about informaiton fluency packed into the 21CIF website. To open doors to content, this page will introduce you to hyperlinked content that will help you to teach students how to locate, evaluate, and ethically use digital information.

Curious?  Give it a click!

NoodleTools : Blog : Noodling » Blog Archive » NoodleTools Provides Its Show Me© Information Literacy Modules Gratis | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

In a widespread effort to support teachers and students in the tricky art of evaluating information, NoodleTools has made freely available its Show Me Information Literacy Modules:http://www.noodletools.com/guide/showme/

With a mix of vibrant images, visual annotation and text, the modules are designed by educators at NoodleTools to engage students in information literacy and the research process. What constitutes credible information? How does source type contribute to relevance, authority and point of view? How do I evaluate and cite born-digital images and online sources?

Over twenty full modules are available, addressing source and website evaluation, digital literacy skills, plagiarism prevention and ethical writing. There are three progressive levels to choose from (Starter, Junior and Advanced) for elementary through university students.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Debbie Abilock is a seasoned professional librarian and media specialist who is the driving force behind NoodleTools.  These new modules promise affordable, on demand, modular training.  Check them out!

Have Your Teachers Banned Wikipedia? They Must Not Know About This. | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
Wikipedia's most common sources of information are news outlets, books, and academic archives. So if your teacher has banned Wikipedia, just follow Wikipedia's trail of sources to get to the good stuff. Oh, and don't tell them we sent you.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Wikipedia is a solid way to begin a search on many topics IF you follow the backtrail to the sources listed in the article.

Deborah Owen's curator insight, May 7, 8:12 AM

Hmmm... Worth knowing about. Still can't cite it, but a good place to start for background info.

A great starting point - track it back to see where it might have come from.

Lorena Swetnam's curator insight, May 7, 9:43 AM

Content Curation for Nonprofits - Notes from #13ntccur8

Content Curation for Nonprofits - Notes from #13ntccur8 | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
This year at the Nonprofit Technology Conference, I had the pleasure of designing and facilitating a session on "Content Curation for Nonprofits"  with Will Coley.  This blog post offers reflections and resources from the session.

I’ve been a content curator for many years, using the techniques to help me develop curriculum materials for workshops and blog posts – as a form of professional development.  Will Coley, comes to the topic understanding how activists and activist organizations are using the techniques as part of their content and engagement strategies. Will is also does a lot of work with video – so when he proposed that we incorporate video interviews as part of the session,  I was thrilled.

Pennsylvania Study Concludes School Librarians Boost Student Achievement

Pennsylvania Study Concludes School Librarians Boost Student Achievement | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA), Education Law Center (ELC) and Health Sciences Library Consortium were awarded a National Leadership research grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for this study. By analyzing the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), which measures reading, writing, math, and science achievement for schoolchildren, this study determined that “reading and writing scores are better for students who have a full-time certified librarian than those who don’t.”

It is this statement that alerts me to the need to do this ... "When the study initially began, researchers discovered that many lawmakers were ignorant to the struggles facing school libraries in that many did not know that schools were not required to have libraries, while others were unaware of how quickly school library programs were being cut."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Curation is a natural for teachers and Librarians.  I also hope it becomes a process that is commonly taught to kids.  It's a great way to follow your curiosity and build something useful and meaningful from the research process.

Susan Daniels's curator insight, April 17, 11:09 PM

This easy to understand infographic for teachers is full of great ideas for "curating for professional development". The beauty of this is the same techniques can be applied to many other professions as well.

The "information highway" is for a bazillion purposes that include professions with accredited degrees or self-taught professions learned through a lifetime of experience.

Truth be known, every time we "search" a topic online, we are aggregating information that we can then curate to meet our individual needs and wants.

Now that you are becoming more aware of the act of "aggregate 'n' curate" in our daily lives - how has curating entered into your life and career? What are some of the tools you use, from the most simplest to the highly complicated. What's your list of curation tools today?

Susan Daniels's comment, May 9, 3:24 PM
Yes Dennis! I so agree. Without realizing it, most bloggers are aggregating and curating when they write their blog posts. No one is an island - all ideas come from something. :)

Europeana, Europe's digital library, museum and archive, belongs to the public and must represent the public interest.

The Public Domain is the material from which society derives knowledge and fashions new cultural works.

Having a healthy and thriving Public Domain is essential to the social and economic well-being of society.

Digitisation of Public Domain content does not create new rights over it: works that are in the Public Domain in analogue form continue to be in the Public Domain once they have been digitised.
