Why school librarians are critical to digital learning | eSchool News | eSchool News | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
A new Follett-sponsored initiative aims to raise awareness of how important school librarians are to the success of digital learning.

School librarians are critical to the success of digital learning initiatives, and they deserve a place at the table in discussions about digital learning: That’s the message behind a new awareness campaign that targets K-12 superintendents and other senior school district leaders.

Do I Really Have to Leave the Role of School Librarian To Do the Work of a School Librarian?

Do I Really Have to Leave the Role of School Librarian To Do the Work of a School Librarian? | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

The new issue of School Library Journal features a cover story called, “Next Year’s Model: Sarah Ludwig left the library, became a tech coordinator, and forged a path to the future.” Unless I have misinterpreted the article, author Linda Braun wonders if school librarians have to leave the library and take on a completely different job title to do the work of a modern school librarian. The thesis seems to be that school librarians taking on job titles other than school librarian, like “technology coordinator”, might be the future of the profession. While I’ve had my own misgivings about the future of the profession, I respectfully disagree with Linda Braun and would argue that such a path will only lead to the demise, not the flowering, of our profession’s future.

Doug Johnson's Take On Libraries & Tech

Here's a long list of "Laws" that will have you smiling and nodding in recognition! ~ Dennis

---------------------------

As far as I can tell, cynicism, pessimism, or hypocrisy have never served any teacher or student well. But a little clear-eyed honesty well-stated certainly can.

Harry Truman said it best: “I don’t give them hell; I just tell them the truth and they think it’s hell.”

Well, it’s not really my intention to give anyone hell, but here are a few “truths” that may seem a bit curmudgeonly. I believe these are my own, but if anyone recognizes the same sentiment stated in a similar fashion by someone else, I’d like to know about it.

I am sure that the genome project will soon discover a curmudgeon gene, but having worked in libraries and with technology for over 30 years, I believe I have earned my right to be a bit cranky without the benefit of genetic predisposition.

Agree or disagree. Add to the list if you’d like using the comment section below. Share your law!

Do school librarians have "enduring values?" - Home - Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

Doug Johnson is always interesting!

Just as technology was starting to have a major impact on libraries, long-time academic librarian and past ALA president Michael Gorman identified these as enduring central or "core" values of librarianship (Gorman, 2000):

Stewardship
Service
Intellectual Freedom
Rationalism
Literacy and learning
Equity of access to recorded knowledge and information
Privacy
Democracy

Are these core values still held by practicing school librarians? Are there other common central beliefs that define us as librarians? When I describe my own professional core values as a librarian, I include:

Why Most People Say They’re Addicted to the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC]| The Committed Sardine | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it

How does one define Internet addiction? It might all come down to perception, after all, but consider this: According to this article in Mashable.com, over half of Internet users actually confess to feeling thier use of it is within the realm of addiction. And maybe they're right. After all, it's tempting, always available, immensely satisfying, it changes the chemistry of our brains significantly, and we absolutely can't imagine living without it. Sounds like an addiction to me.
