Technically a Librarian: Make Writing

Technically a Librarian: Make Writing | 21st Century Information Fluency | Scoop.it
While at one of our ELA planning meetings, we were discussing the lack of enthusiasm kids have for writer's workshop. What was once a time for kids to express themselves creatively, was now a time that kids dreaded. How sad? I loved Writer's Workshop as a kid. We had to fix this. They had tried creative prompts, incorporating movies and music, but they were still "bleh".

As we were brainstorming, an 8th grade English teacher brought up the book "Make Writing" by Angela Stockman. Oddly enough, I had just finished reading my advanced readers copy since I'm a member of the Hack Learning VIP program. All of a sudden we both were sitting at the edge of our seats ready to do it!
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I love these ideas.  This is something I'd start next Monday!

PodCast: Last week, Nora interviewed David Weinberger about libraries of the future. David is a writer, a senior researcher at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and he’s the co-director of The Harvard Library Innovation Lab.

Libraries Make Room For 'Hackerspaces' : NPR

As information becomes more and more digital, public libraries are striving to redefine their roles. A small number are working to create "hackerspaces," where do-it-yourselfers share sophisticated tools as well as expertise.

There's a tasty keyword combo in this piece: "interventionist librarianship"  It didn't take me where I expected, but I eventuall found what I was looking for.  ~ Dennis, my thought has been provoked and it makes me smile.

Hacking the Library?  It's about time. ~ Dennis

---------------

What is the Harvard Library Innovation Laboratory?

We are a small group within the Harvard University Library system that implements in software ideas about how libraries can be ever more valuable.

What do you do?

We hack libraries...in the good sense of discovering and delivering more capability and value.

Can you be a little more specific?

We work in three broad areas:

1. We think in public.
2. We build software that demonstrates how libraries can bring yet more value to scholars and researchers.
3. We amplify our effect by eagerly partnering with other groups with similar passions.
