Hillsboro Migrant Summer School brings in Mexican teachers for culture lessons

Hillsboro Migrant Summer School brings in Mexican teachers for culture lessons | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

Osorio Pacheco was one of three elementary teachers from Mexico brought to theHillsboro School District in June under a federal migrant education program. The teachers integrated lessons of culture into the Migrant Summer School's regular curriculum focus of reading, writing and math.

The Bi-national Migrant Education Teacher Exchange Program is part of an initiative that started in 1976 to help migrant students in California. The departments of education in Mexico and the United States have since partnered to improve schooling for children who travel frequently between the two countries.

John Fallon, chief executive, said: “In trading terms, 2013 has begun much as we expected. In general, good growth in our digital, services and developing-market businesses continues to offset tough conditions for traditional publishing. Our strategy is to transform Pearson into a single operating company that is sharply focussed on the biggest needs in global education and on measurable learning outcomes. With our restructuring programme on track and the reorganisation of the company under way, we are making significant progress towards that goal.”

Analyze and Improve Your Writing Skills Online With Slick Write

Analyze and Improve Your Writing Skills Online With Slick Write | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

"Even the best writers from among us are prone to the odd mistake. Slick Write is an online tool which helps to correct and even improve your writing on a number of levels.

"Slick Write enables you to evaluate the stylistic features and potential flaws of your work, as well as giving you the ability to identify spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Interestingly, the tool gives you an insight into the structure of your content, breaking up paragraphs and sentences in a unique, informative way.

"You can analyse the flow of your work, and assess some of the statistics which Slick Write provides for you. When using all the features in unison, it becomes relatively easy to turn an average piece of text, and turn it into a literary masterpiece.

Assessing Student Learning - five practical guides

Assessing Student Learning - five practical guides | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

After a decade of rapid expansion in Australian higher education, student numbers have grown considerably in many courses and subjects, especially at the undergraduate level.

Larger class sizes pose significant teaching challenges, not least in the assessment of student learning. Perhaps most troubling, large classes may limit the amount of feedback provided to students.

TBL and PBL: Two learner-centred approaches with English language learning

TBL and PBL: Two learner-centred approaches with English language learning | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

The language presented and practiced does not take into account the particular needs of each learner; the language content is almost always dictated by the coursebook and/or syllabus. For this reason, many teachers, having experimented with the PPP approach turn to more learner-centred approaches where the needs of the learner are central to the lesson content. Two such approaches are TBL (Task-Based Learning) and PBL (Project-Based Learning).

I use both methods to focus on real world learning applications.

Let's face it -- everyone has something to say some time or another. ESL learners are no different. As a teacher of either online English or classroom ESL instruction, it is important to make your students feel comfortable speaking. They may feel embarrassed about their inability to speak English fluently. Or perhaps they are just shy. As an instructor, you need to ask yourself how you are impacting the learning environment:

Experts Take Notes - The Value of Note Taking Skills in the 21st Century | Ben Casnocha

Experts Take Notes - The Value of Note Taking Skills in the 21st Century | Ben Casnocha | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

According to my friend who relayed this story, there were two older folks in the front row who stood out: John Doerr and Ron Conway. They are both legendary investors in Silicon Valley.

They stood out not just because their gray hair shimmered in the sea of youth around them, but because they were the only people in the audience taking notes.

Isn’t it funny, my friend told me, that arguably the two most successful people in the room after Zuckerberg were also the only two people taking notes?
