Anyone Still Listening? Educators Consider Killing the Lecture | Mind/Shift | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

I have stopped using lectures for years now. Active listening and authentic learning is the only way I teach Thai English language learners along with metacognitive learning strategies.

More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Levels of Learning | Mind/Shift

More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Levels of Learning | Mind/Shift | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it
How do we measure learning beyond knowledge of content? Finding that winning combination of criteria can prove to be a complicated and sometimes difficult process. Schools that are pushing boundaries are learning that it takes time, a lot of conversation, and a willingness to let students participate in that evaluation.
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

Remember that assessment is a feedback tool for the learner and the learning leader...for that moment in time. The assessment should not be the only indicator that progress toward the learning objectives is occurring, but rather a guide toward an expected outcome or goal. It is a false fallacy to only believe that standardized assessment (one- size-fits-all) can be used to determine all outcomes.

MultiBrief: The 4 C’s of 21st Century Learning for ELLs: Critical Thinking

MultiBrief: The 4 C’s of 21st Century Learning for ELLs: Critical Thinking | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

The key for they application of the "four C's"  with ELL's in functional manner is the teaching approach and the student learning objectives. Most ESL instructors have to follow a fairly strict, structured, pre-approved curriculum focused on Content-Based Learning. So the instructors can do the work and go home.

The 21st Century ESL instructor would integrate and modify the content by using teaching approaches that integrate the 4C's for example; Project -Based Learning, Problem- Based Learning, Inquiry- based learning approaches. These approaches to language learning help to develop needed skills and applications of functional English inside the sheltered classroom and outside in the real world environment.

Appreciating Slang’s Creative Contributions to Language | Mind/Shift | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

English professor Anne Curzan makes an unusual request of her students at the University of Michigan — she asks students to teach her two new slang words. While some might cringe at the use of YOLO or hangry in an academic setting, Curzan, who is also a language historian, appreciates the creativity in the words that make their way into the vernacular, and ultimately, the dictionary.

In this TED video, she explains the role of dictionary editors and how they view language, including slang:

Learning #languages is an essential part of a modern lifestyle. Even if you are not a #linguist, knowing a foreign language can become a real asset for your #business and career. Professional language learners give you some advice how to make the learning process easier and much more effective.

Ivo Nový's curator insight, November 22, 2014 12:42 AM

One of the most common barriers to conversing in a new language is the fear of making mistakes. So, don't worry about making mistakes. Native speakers are like doting parents: any attempt from you to communicate in their language is objective proof that you are a gifted genius. They’ll appreciate your effort and even help you.
