More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Levels of Learning | Mind/Shift

More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Levels of Learning | Mind/Shift | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it
How do we measure learning beyond knowledge of content? Finding that winning combination of criteria can prove to be a complicated and sometimes difficult process. Schools that are pushing boundaries are learning that it takes time, a lot of conversation, and a willingness to let students participate in that evaluation.
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

Remember that assessment is a feedback tool for the learner and the learning leader...for that moment in time. The assessment should not be the only indicator that progress toward the learning objectives is occurring, but rather a guide toward an expected outcome or goal. It is a false fallacy to only believe that standardized assessment (one- size-fits-all) can be used to determine all outcomes.

John Fallon, chief executive, said: “In trading terms, 2013 has begun much as we expected. In general, good growth in our digital, services and developing-market businesses continues to offset tough conditions for traditional publishing. Our strategy is to transform Pearson into a single operating company that is sharply focussed on the biggest needs in global education and on measurable learning outcomes. With our restructuring programme on track and the reorganisation of the company under way, we are making significant progress towards that goal.”

This book is a must-read for educators everywhere. In May I wrote this post sharing some of the ideas expressed in the introduction to Salman Khan's recent

“People learn at different rates. Some people seem to catch on to things in quick bursts of intuition; others grunt and grind their way towards comprehension. Quicker isn’t necessarily smarter and slower definitely isn’t dumber.” Educators all know this, yet our existing education system does very little to accommodate this reality.

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

2012 was a transformative year in education.   Between the introduction of the MOOC (the ‘Massive Open Online Course’), and the explosive growth in the number of online offerings, all eyes were on higher ed. In the past twelve months, students were increasingly able to learn from leading faculty at elite institutions beyond the four walls of their classrooms, and soon, professors will be collaborating across universities to collectively create and distribute for-credit curriculum for an online semester.

New high growth players entered the online education marketplace, and universities began to align around interactive platforms.  As online certificate programs became more robust and hyper-targeted towards professional development, more and more students looked to gain these credentials as a differentiator in the work force.
