This post is an abstract from a non refereed paper I delivered at a conference (Australian Association for Research in Education) back in 2006 when I was first beginning to use image based research...
The use of digital photography and images for documenting childrens' learning, and the development of new ideas draws upon childrens' creativity and narrative skills, and supports the development of new literacies.
Narelle Lemon explores an unusal but effective way of reflection of work for students, through visual based reflections.
Students take photos of the work they have created rather than writing about it. Lemon claims that "visual narrative makes visible the different parts or narratives of a story as well enabling opportunity to explore different positions within a dynamic environment or situation." This is a new and i believe, a fantastic approach to students refelctions. This allows students to become more creative and excited about their reflections, rather than just writing for the sake of it.
"Throughout the inquiry of students using digital cameras to create visual narratives themes emerged associated to the creation of learning communities and development of reflective skills. An exploration of first time use of the camera is discussed as well as some key themes that emerged over time."
I would love to incorperate this form of reflection into my classroom as it is a modern approach to what can be a "boring" activity for students.

I believe it ismportnat to expose students to the the countless (free) resources the the internet has to offer so they can utilize these research in not only in their primary school projects/ presentations but take this into later years/ high school years. Althgough there are countless resources and programmes such as this i feel "Explee" is a simple yet effective programme that promotes creative thinking. This software would be most suited to upper level primary.

We are still here and strong. Jandamarra was an Indigenous hero...whose white ‘bosses’ called him Pigeon. He knew in his heart that the country was inscribed by powerful spirits in the contours of its landscape. The Wandjinas created the land and sky. They also created the spirits that swim in the water soaks and sacred places. Pigeon couldn't see them, but these spirits visited his dreams. Jandamarra's story is an epic and tragic tale which Mark Greenwood has re-told in a simple and yet majestic style, accompanied by Terry Denton’s vibrantly graphic, illustrative interpretation. This is a creative re-imagining of the life of an extraordinary man and of a seminal time in Australia’s history. The reverberations of the events known as the ‘frontier wars’ are still being felt more than one hundred years later and will continue to have an impact on our national psyche.
Jandamarra and his people are still here, and they are still strong.
This is a book i have found that many teachers are using in both upper and lower primary in order to teach students Australian History. The book foccuses on the life of a man in a seminal time in Australian History a foccusing on the Jandamarra people. I belive this would be a fantastic resource to use in the classroom, especially for upper primary students who are starting to do pursuasive writing a book responces. This book will enage students as well as giving them insight into life as a "Jadamarra person, and therefore how we have evolved and changed thorughout history.
This particular link gives a wide range of teachers notes and questions that can be used in the classroom with this book. Which is clearly a great resource for teachers to have when approaching basing a lesson on this book.

Taryn Coxall's insight:

Stumbling apon this website i found it extremely exciting and interesting that skills and tutorials such as these are available for children at such young ages.
This website foccuses on being a game deisgner, programmer and digital artist. As a perspecitve tacher i find it extremely important that students are exposed to a wide range of career options and skills rather than just those surrounding their core subjects. I think this website could be extremely beneficial in areas such as media and art and an acitivty that would enagage and excite students, especially those interested in this area.

This article gives great insight into the upcoming phenominon of "Game Based Learning".Although i have never seen it in my practises, after reading abit about it, i believe game based learning is something i would incoperate into my own classroom. Game Based learning provides a stimulating and engaging way of learning for children on a wide range of educational areas and topics. It is proven through this approach to learning students aremore likely to become motivated to learn, become increasingly engage and excel in their learning. Although many peoleay belive an "old school" approach to teaching is best, i feel it is highly necassary to kepp up with the fast moving pace of technology on offer, and use theseresources to help student in the classroom. Most learners that i have come aross are kinaesthetic learning, being one myself i can see how these games will help a variety of different learners and create opportunity for divergent thinking.
This is a fun (somewhat strange) but more engaging resource to help teach younger years australian history. It is clear that todays generations are much more inclined ot watch a video or listen to a song than ready a book, and from experience they are not worried about quality or subject.. they will iterally watch anything. I belive this video will be a great introductary resource for beggining to teach history to primary students and something that they will remember rather than go in one ear andout the other.
tive 21st Century Learning" is a short article explaining a positive point of view towards technology and mobile learning in the 21st century. As a teacher, i feel it is important to embrace to technologies in your classroom in order to effectively use the resources around you to perform at your best as a teacher.
