We are almost 15% of the way through this century. Is that a problem? We talk about this in sort of a future tense.

Melita Ryland's curator insight, June 5, 2013 10:49 PM

Critical thinking as a skill is the mother of all other skills and one that underpins and solidify students overall learning. This photo would be ideal to hang on the wall near your working space to remind you of easy ways to include critical thinking into the classroom and how certain questions topics make people think in different ways and with different parts of the brain. For Examples: Open minded, Problem Solving, Collaboration, Real world applications, Analyse, Evaluate and Reason, Reflection and Communiaction

Creative classrooms giving students skills & hope for 21st century success

Linda Buckmaster's insight:

According to the World Innovation Summit for Education, education is failing to respond to changing economies thus leaving students unprepared to thrive in the modern workplace.

.

In this  article the USN Endowment for the Arts explains that at-risk students with access to the arts in or out of school fare better in school and the workforce and participate more directly in their communities.

PYE’s Creative Community Model helps teachers weave the arts into classroom culture, while building a safe environment for creative expression. This supportive climate, enables students to  connect with their purpose, interests, and values - they begin to care about their futures and shift from passive to proactive learners..

Is Creativity the Number 1 Skill for the 21st Century?

Is Creativity the Number 1 Skill for the 21st Century? | 21st Century Creative Resources | Scoop.it
Against a backdrop of uncertainty, economic turmoil and unprecedented change a new picture is emerging of the skills and traits for success (and perhaps even simply survival) in the modern era.
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

The article looks at seven themes that may convince you that creativity may well be the number one skill required for the 21st Century.

In conclusion the writer poses the question ...

Are we developing our creativity to prepare for the modern world of work?

Does the team we work in create and innovate?

Are we prepared for the uncertainty of the future - is creativity top of the agenda?

10 Lesson Plans to Develop Digital Literacies

10 Lesson Plans to Develop Digital Literacies | 21st Century Creative Resources | Scoop.it

Over the last few months I have been working hard to develop a set of commercially available lesson materials. These lesson plans aren't specifically designed for English language learners, though they will be useful for students at higher levels who want stimulating skills based practice or for any teacher interested in developing a CLIL or content based approach to language learning. They were designed to enable any teacher to develop students in a way that is more closely aligned to the kinds of skills they will need to function effectively and critically in the digital world.

These are enjoyable exercises in strategy, tactics, and problem-solving thought. Teach Thought have  collected 25 of these critical thinking apps: for grades 8-12, but several are for students as young as kindergarten.

Whilst providing instant feedback to the player as they go,  they are also practicing extended thinking over a period of time that encourages to look at digital circumstances with a critical eye.
