We are almost 15% of the way through this century. Is that a problem? We talk about this in sort of a future tense.

Melita Ryland's curator insight, June 5, 2013 10:49 PM

Critical thinking as a skill is the mother of all other skills and one that underpins and solidify students overall learning. This photo would be ideal to hang on the wall near your working space to remind you of easy ways to include critical thinking into the classroom and how certain questions topics make people think in different ways and with different parts of the brain. For Examples: Open minded, Problem Solving, Collaboration, Real world applications, Analyse, Evaluate and Reason, Reflection and Communiaction

Asking a Simple Question Can Change Everything for a Student

Asking one question can open a world of opportunity for students who are otherwise disengaged in school: What do you like to do every day?

Via Scott MacClintic
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

Gallup's research "Asking a simple question can change everything for a student" follows OpenColleges research that found the more a teacher cares about her students, the more respect she will receive from them.

By asking one question can open a world of opportunity for students who are disengaged in college.  For example one simple question: "what do you like to do every day?"

I have observed classes where the teacher does not even greet their class with a simple "hello".Teachers who are not engaged with their students will result in disengaged students.

Five Critical Skills to Empower Students in the Digital Age

Five Critical Skills to Empower Students in the Digital Age | 21st Century Creative Resources | Scoop.it

Via Scott MacClintic
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

The beginning of the school year is a time to set the tone for a student’s learning experience, including what teachers expect from students. But that first week of school is also the time to teach valuable learning skills that will be used throughout the year. Alan November, a former teacher turned lecturer, consultant and author, challenged teachers to rethink how they start the school year by outlining skills that are crucial to students to learn in the first five days of school.

This is a great infographic for showing the thought process of finding information.

Terry Yelmene's curator insight, August 16, 11:50 AM

A pretty well-reasoned, fundamental thought process for most knowledge work research.  This serves as an even better backward (there-to-here) model to guide the core research workflow process automation  a knowledge worker may want to devise, install.  Think work product-informed -> DevonThink structures -> DevonAgent w/'Active Filtered' automated searches.  The most important drivers here are - 'ethical' - (more than just multiple sources, a stage needs to be added at the work product stage to provide authenticity) and - 'bias' -  (a post automated search,  subsequent manual search for corroborating items selection to provide authority).

Via James Stanforth, Larry Davies
Linda Buckmaster's insight:

Students' exposure to so-called 21st-century skills in school correlates positively with perceived quality of work later in life, according to a new study by Gallup Inc

"Interestingly, younger participants (ages 18-22) were slightly less likely to say they used collaborative technology in school than older participants—a surprise given the growing prevalence of social media and online collaboration tools in recent years.  On the whole, however, younger respondents had higher levels of 21st-century skills development than older survey participants. The study conjectures that this may be an indication that "teaching strategies are changing in the U.S."
