As the article suggests if carried out correctly project based learning can be a deeper learning experience.  PBL also leads to creative enquiry and teamwork.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 24, 6:47 PM

So how would one go about reinterpreting project-based learning? This post explores this idea in depth, providing five key areas where change must occur, and detailing one to five additional ideas that will help move project-based learning to a "philosophy of inquiry."
What are the five key areas?

1. Put PBL on a continuum of inquiry.

2. Blend surface knowledge and deeper learning.

3. Start with a sophisticated student-centered culture.

4. Make collaboration as important in school as it is in life.

5. Understand that PBL cannot be done alone.

If you are using project-based learning, or are considering implementing project-based learning next year take the time to check out this post. There are many great ideas that will lead our students to "deeper learning, creative inquiry, and a better fit with a collaborative world in which doing and knowing are one thing."

Kate JohnsonMcGregor's curator insight, March 25, 7:04 AM

This is helpful as a philosophical vision - how to rethink our teaching to effectively integrate the inquiry process. Love it!

Rosemary Tyrrell's curator insight, March 25, 11:32 AM

This post includes some strategic suggestions on how to make PBL more meaningful for your students.

What are public schools are spending on the arts vs various other programmes.  What does this mean for your child's education today and their career options in the future.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 25, 5:32 PM

Today teachers are asked to provide opportunities for students to show their creativity, but in many schools are programs are being cut due to budget concerns...and STEM is being renamed STEAM to include the arts.

This infographic explores why it is important to have the arts as a player in public education. Below are a few of the reasons from the infographic. Click through to see all the reasons (eleven if I counted correctly).

* Have you wondered how much federal funding goes to the National Science Foundation as compared to the Arts and Humanities? Do the figures of $5 billion versus $250 million surprise you?
* The No Child Left Behind Act outlines the arts (music, art, foreign language) as core academic subjects, but the Huffington Post notes that fewer elementary schools are offering it...and research shows that students whom study arts are three times more likely to be awarded for good attendance.

You will also find a list of the resources used in the infographic.

This is an infographic that you may want to share with administrators and with parents.

I agree!  Once you find the right curators and develop relationships with them, they turn into mentors. Some of them are very successful, industry experts, and deeply respected.  Some material gets put out months before they're covered in a college class.  The trick is to be discerning as to what is merely a fad versus a long-term trend. ;)
