Personalizing Learning in 2012-The Student & Parent Point of View

Personalizing Learning in 2012-The Student & Parent Point of View | 21st Century Concepts- Student-Centered Learning | Scoop.it

Jackie Gerstein shares in her blog "Speak Up Report:  Mapping a Personalized Journey".  The report released by Project Tomorrow supports how and why technology can support personalized learning.

"What follows is an Infographic and key findings of Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connects the Dots with Digital Learning"

"Students are already seeking out ways to personalize their learning. Looking to address what they perceive as deficiencies in classroom experiences, students are turning to online classes to study topics that pique their intellectual curiosity, to message and discussion boards to explore new ideas about their world, or to online collaboration tools to share their expertise with other students they don’t even know. Their experience with seeking out their own personalized learning experiences has changed their overall expectations for their education, and not just for the use of technology.

"These students have an intrinsic understanding that like so many other aspects of their lives, personalization is the key to their own greater engagement in the learning process. So, even while students have turned to personalized learning on their own time, in their own way, why is it that this revolution of technology that has enabled personalization not also penetrated our classrooms? Why is it that we are for the most part still educating our children with a model that perpetuates the fallacy of one size fits all? Why is it that technology has transformed the way we shop, bank and interact with each other and not yet had the same impact on teaching and learning, at least as education stands today?"

Maryland Learning Links Video - Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

This is an excellent video produced by Maryland Learning Links that provides an overview of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and explores the ways teachers can use this approach to reach all of their students.

Recommend using this video to create an understanding that UDL is about the variability in learning and that by using UDL in practice, we can teach all learners.

Maximizing the Learning of All Students

Maximizing the Learning of All Students | 21st Century Concepts- Student-Centered Learning | Scoop.it

Carol Ann Tomlinson, EdD

One is it takes too much time to plan, but the other is it takes too much time in a classroom to differentiate. The planning piece, of course, is a matter of saying differentiation doesn't say spend an hour planning tonight like you always did and then add differentiation to it. What it would say is, if you have an hour to plan, think about how you can do that in a way that's going to work for kids. And, again, if you go slowly it doesn't need to eat your life in any way at all. But the issue in terms of it takes too much time in class is an intriguing one to me because it turns out that differentiation is not what takes extra time in class. What takes extra time in class is giving kids chances to work with ideas and manipulate ideas and come to own the information. It doesn't take as long just to tell kids things or just to cover standards, but we also don't have any evidence that students come away with understanding or the capacity to use what they've learned to transfer knowledge. When you take time to let kids think and make meaning of stuff, that slows us down some in terms of coverage. If you let kids make meaning of stuff in two different ways, or if you let kids make meaning of stuff working alone or working with somebody, or if you let kids making make meaning working independently or working with a teacher, that doesn't take any longer. Where it got to take longer was in the making meaning part.
