Why Can't E-Books Disrupt The Lucrative College Textbook Business?

Why Can't E-Books Disrupt The Lucrative College Textbook Business? | 21st-century Classroom | Scoop.it

College students today stream movies from Netflix, queue up music on Spotify, and order late-night snacks on Seamless. But when it comes to buying textbooks, many students are still doing things the old-fashioned way: buying pricy paper copies from the campus bookstore at the start of the semester, then selling them back for a fraction of the purchase price when classes are done.

Sandra V. Barbosa's curator insight, January 25, 2013 1:50 AM

William J. Ryan's curator insight, January 25, 2013 8:57 AM

Critical thinking is a skill we all need, we all teach, we all use and sometimes a picture can help tell the story!

The Evolution of Learning Technologies

Human beings have always been seekers of knowledge. The minute we discover something new, we want to share it with others and move onto the next achievement. Since the beginning of recorded history (and probably before) we have always strived to discover the mysteries of the planet, of Earth and of ourselves. How has learning evolved over the course of human history and what might the future hold for us?

The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | 21st-century Classroom | Scoop.it

A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes designed to engage students more deeply in their learning.

A transformation which is not a revolution. It will take time and effort.  It's important we give it the space to take its natural course.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, July 25, 2014 2:11 PM

Thank you Nik. I like reading about innovations like e-textbook transformation that make learning more accessible to all students.

Raj Shekhar Mishra's curator insight, March 20, 2015 3:07 AM

To engage students more deeply in their learning publishers are making the textbook a hands-on activity by adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes.  The goal is not simply to replace traditional textbooks with e-books but to fundamentally change teaching and learning .The best learning strategy is the multi-modal approach—you can hear it, you can see it, you can manipulate and interact with the content.
