Breaking the Mold: School Fosters Design and Discovery

Breaking the Mold: School Fosters Design and Discovery | 21st C Learning | Scoop.it

Modern learning is more about discovery. It’s not so much waiting as doing, says Will Richardson. Learners should be empowered to continue learning and to use their interests to fuel projects that they care about.

"We don’t need school to be better, we need schools to be really, really different,” he said.

Richardson’s three ideas for changing the way society thinks about learning that have nothing to do with student achievement on test scores.

Hiring Managers Rank Best and Worst Words to Use in a Resume

Hiring Managers Rank Best and Worst Words to Use in a Resume | 21st C Learning | Scoop.it

CHICAGO, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- One in six (17 percent) hiring managers spend 30 seconds or less, on average, reviewing resumes, according to a new CareerBuilder survey. A majority (68 percent) spend less than two minutes. With so little time to capture interest, even a candidate's word choice can make a difference. The nationwide sample of employers identified which commonly-used resume terms are overused or cliche and which are strong additions.

How do you react to the top 5?

The following terms are resume turn-offs as selected by respondents:

   1. Best of breed: 38 percent

   2. Go-getter: 27 percent

   3. Think outside of the box: 26 percent

   4. Synergy: 22 percent

   5. Go-to person: 22 percent

Lisa Jones's comment, March 15, 7:09 AM
Being a resume writer, I couldn't agree more. Catching up with those words is multitasking. However, people who write the job posting may be someone other than the hiring manager. if they put these words as priorities in the job posting the applicant must use them in the resume or it decreases their odds of being pulled by applicant tracking systems. Talk about a "Catch-22!"
Mfaculty's curator insight, March 15, 10:33 AM
