Experimenting in Education: 21st Century School Culture

Experimenting in Education: 21st Century School Culture | 21st century education | Scoop.it

In Changing Education Paradigms, Sir Ken Robinson discusses the habits of institutions and the habitats they occupy.  While his intelligence exceeds mine by a factor of 10, I think what he is talking about is creating a collaborative culture of learning among all stakeholders of a school or institution.  Among other things, this culture must be truly collaborative--from top to bottom, or better yet, from bottom to top.  There are so many aspects to explore within this thought, but one that struck me recently is the general disjunction of professional development between administration and staff....

Paradigm Shift–Thinking Differently About Technology

Paradigm Shift–Thinking Differently About Technology | 21st century education | Scoop.it

How long has the word paradigm been around? I remember many years ago talking about the concept of paradigm shift (I had to google it to verify that Joel Barker was the author I recall being the expert of the time.) Anyhow, enough of the brief history lesson on my knowledge of paradigms. But I do have a point, lets talk about this concept.

As I work with groups that come and visit our district and as I do private consulting with districts, what I am finding is that iPads change how we think about technology. But not everyone is on the same page, not everyone has the same background knowledge as it relates to iPads and rolling out a 1-1 initiative. So I would like to share a few of the common themes I’m seeing and hearing as I chat with teachers, administrators, and school board members.

What Makes a Master Teacher

What Makes a Master Teacher | 21st century education | Scoop.it

My name is George Couros, and I am currently a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning with Parkland School Division, located in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada. The schools are from ages K-12, and I love working with kids of all ages.

I am passionate about distributed leadership within my division, and believe that creating a collaborative environment with all stakeholders, will help to ensure that we meet the best needs of all children.

The term “master teacher” seems to get thrown around a lot, but is something that many educators aspire to be. In my ten years in the field of education, I would say that the definition of “master teacher” has definitely changed. When I think of a master teacher, here are the qualities that I would suggest they have:

1. Connects with kids first

2. Teaches kids first and curriculum second

3. Ensures that they draw relevance to curriculum

4. Works with students to develop a love of learning

5. Embodies lifelong learning

6. Focuses on learning goals as opposed to performance goals

7. Ensures that “character education” is an essential part of learning

8. Passionate about the content they teach

9. A master teacher is a “school teacher” -

10. Strong communication skills

Reinventing Education To Teach Creativity And Entrepreneurship| The Committed Sardine | 21st century education | Scoop.it

Fast Company featured this great article recently written by Jennifer Medbery, a software developer and former mathematics teacher. In her article she stresses the realization we must come to that, even though shifts in our classroom instruction approaches are here to stay, teachers are still the most  important part of a student's life. Our personal shift has to be towards teaching creativity and innovation skills, and being the guides on our students' paths toward relevant and useful life skills aquisition.

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break | 21st century education | Scoop.it

I believe we all want to engage our students in the creation and re-creation of their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams, that are relevant to the world they will live in. Not the world we were told was in store for us. Beyond the curriculum, we are in fact teaching our students life skills that will hopefully empower them to make smart choices for the rest of their lives.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Tech-leading Principals - T.H.E. Journal

7 Habits of Highly Effective Tech-leading Principals - T.H.E. Journal | 21st century education | Scoop.it

7 Habits of Highly Effective Tech-leading PrincipalsT.H.E.  The conventional wisdom in education is that any school reform--be it curriculum, instruction, assessment, or teacher professionalism--is most likely to take hold in schools that have strong leadership. The same holds true for technology. Any educator will tell you the most successful implementation of technology programs takes place in schools where the principal sees him or herself as a technology leader.

"The role of the principal is one of facilitation and modeling behavior," remarks Robert Farrace, senior director of communications and development with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. "The principal who models these behaviors is going to be able to inspire innovation in their school much more effectively than a principal who simply requires that teachers use technology, or collaborate, or take risks."

In the 21st century, as standard-based reform is blazing the path in education, students are not the only ones being judged on their ability to pass or fail a battery of tests. In fact, with the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act, school systems across the nation are under constant scrutiny. All children are expected to achieve, and teachers are the logical stewards of this new goal. Harvard Graduate School of Education
