5 New Technologies That Have Changed The Digital Classroom ...

In the past, the suggestion of getting a college degree without ever cracking a book meant paying a degree mill. It meant the degree was in name only, reflecting neither learning nor effort.

Then distance learning meant correspondence courses, perhaps combined with some coordinated telecasts. Technology has already changed all that, and the future will change it even further. Edudemic.

How to Fuel the Innovation Engine in Learning

How to Fuel the Innovation Engine in Learning | 21st century education | Scoop.it

Can creativity be taught? If innovation is truly the key to this country’s success, then it’s time to think strategically about engendering creativity into our education system.

That’s part of Tina Seelig’s thesis in her new book Ingenius: A Crash Course on Creativity. Case in point: In schools, when we give students math problems to solve, we ask simply, “What’s the sum of 10+10?” to which there is only one right answer. But Seelig says we should turn the question on its head, and ask, “How many ways can you add 10+10?” The question you ask is the frame in which the answers will fall, Seelig says.

The 21st Century Principal: 9 Principles of Courageous Leadership ... | 21st century education | Scoop.it

“A common requirement of leaders at all levels is having the courage to make tough decisions and take difficult actions,” write authors David Cottrell and Eric Harvey in their book Leadership Courage: Leadership Strategies for Individual and Organizational Success. A big part of courage in 21st century leadership is standing up for what is right. As Cottrell and Harvey correctly describe, “The true measure of leadership is the ability to look in the mirror and know that you had the courage to do what you felt was the right thing to do.” The 21st Principal.

Do We Really Communicate Better? | Connected Principals | 21st century education | Scoop.it

When you think of connected principals or educators you probably have this vision of people sitting in a classroom with their iPads and smartphones reading the latest blogs or using the newest apps with students. They sit at meetings taking notes on their tablets while other educators sit around them using paper and pens. Being a connected educator means that you stay current with technology and try to infuse it into your instructional or leadership roles.  Connected Principals.

MindShift | 21st century education | Scoop.it

When we envision a well-rounded, progressive education for our kids, we think of a vibrant environment that nurtures students’ passions, provides structure for rich and deep learning, a place where kids can get their hands on projects that are meaningful to them.

That’s the goal at Brightworks, a small, K-12 private school just starting its second year in San Francisco: to re-imagine traditional modes of education so that curiosity and creativity hold sway over standardized tests and worksheets. But in the course of creating this space for students’ interests, the school has also had to refine some of its original ideas to make room for realities like assessments and how to group students.  Mindshift.

The Global Search for Education: More From Singapore - Huffington Post

The Global Search for Education: More From Singapore - Huffington Post | 21st century education | Scoop.it

Singapore is recognized globally as a high-performing education system. Singapore students fared very well in the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Out of 65 countries that took part in these tests, Singapore students ranked fifth in reading, second in mathematics and fourth in science. "Singapore also had the second highest proportion (12.3 percent) of students who are top performers in all three domains," according to a press release from Singapore's Ministry of Education. How do teachers motivate students in the Singapore school system? How do they level the playing field between rich and poor students? How do they handle behavioral problems? Are they obsessed with testing?

Student Advisory: A Model for the 21st Century - Whole Child Education

Student Advisory: A Model for the 21st Century - Whole Child Education | 21st century education | Scoop.it

"Advisory" is often a catch-all phrase for a space and time set aside for faculty and staff to help students face academic, social, psychological, and perhaps physical challenges. Unfortunately, schools seldom give such programs the space, time, and resources needed to accomplish all this. Moreover, advisories are often ill-defined or poorly designed and end up as well-intentioned tangents to the school mission. Nonetheless, the need for effective advisories is especially important in the 21st century because, as never before, students with different abilities and intelligences all need to know how to learn without us and build their shared future. A 21st century advisory is the perfect place to help them do this.

Post written by William J. Tolley, instructional coach and head of history at the International School of Curitiba in Brazil. A graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, he is a member of the current cohort in the Johns Hopkins/ISTE Supervision and Administration graduate certificate program.

I think the time has come to stop using the term 21st Century ... | 21st century education | Scoop.it

It has been the passionate rallying call for change in education for more than a decade and has challenged many of us to rethink the context and culture of learning in this century as significantly different from the previous one.Now that we are more than 10% into it, our use of 21st Century in terms of learning, education, schools, pedagogy now needs to cease. We can’t keep using it forever. One eighth of the 21st Century is behind us, it is time to move on.

Common Core Standards Business

Common Core Standards Business | 21st century education | Scoop.it

I can’t be sure why, but in the last couple months most of the responses I’ve received to posts on this blog have addressed the issue of business’ involvement in public education. I’m honestly surprised at how impassioned (read: angry) almost anyone with something to say on this subject is, regardless of their stance. A couple of regular commenters in particular are totally convinced that big business is about to take over schools, and that the Common Core Standards are the Trojan horse that greedy-eyed monopoly men everywhere will ride in on.  Common Core Standards.
