The Academy Awards are just around the corner, and there are a number ofnominated films that can be great teaching tools for educators this year. It looks like it might be a big year for Steven Spielberg in the classroom and on Award night -- his Lincoln has been nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Picture.

With the abundance of media messages in our society, it's important to ensure students are media literate. The Oscars provide a great opportunity to use the year's best films to teach students about media and film literacy -- they can also be an engaging teaching tool that provokes students' interest in a variety of subjects and issues. One of the possible reasons why education is failing is because they are getting stuck with the same methodologies, procedures, and materials. It is important prepare our kids for their future; to do so, it is important to consider education in regards to technology. Helping learners to get some technology literacy and help them to use devices and platforms wisely is part of our job as 21st century teachers.

The concept of transverse education is cross curricular classes for the 21st century.  Teaching integrated subjects happens easily at elementary, how do we break the barriers at high school which is ruled by discipline silos?  Space and scheduling can make it happen if we have the leaders to do it...

As the world changes educators need to be creative and realise that 21 century capacities are not being developed through existing curriculum and learning structures. Here, the Transverse approach sees Finland leading the charge, preparing students with the interdisciplinary skills and understanding for the world around them. Well worth the read.

'I tell parents all the time kids aren’t hard-wired to sit still all day, so we believe in essence we are giving children back their childhood.' And there are academic benefits.
