Sir Ken Robinson outlines 3 principles crucial for the human mind to flourish - and how current education culture works against them.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Interesting video by Sir Ken on the future of education in the US with the No Child left Behind agenda.  Curiosity, mentoring, engaging, learning and being a diagnostic teacher is part of the process.  But compliance is often part of the product. Does standardisation destroy the process?  If Finland does not have standardisation and there is no drop out, why are they succeeding?  Sir Ken engages with humour some interesting questions!

From computational biology to 3D printing, new technology is changing the game-again

Via Linda Alexander

What next from Google...

Linda Alexander's curator insight, May 3, 3:22 PM

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt explores the technologies that are likely to have the greatest disruptive impact on economies, business models, and people.  Basically, all the grand challenges are being researched.

Firstly, the use of analytical tools in a historically analog world has tremendous implications for biology.  How the genes work--how our brain is wired, etc. Three dimensional printing is also powerful.  Another aspect is the idea of no user interface---the computer making suggestions for you.  We're heading from a command and control era to one where your computer is more like a friend (with permission) who makes suggestions. There will be a symbotic relationship (we hope). Lastly, the media is not really following the big race--that of automation.  What is happening to the low wage worker? What is the solution?  Schmidt suggests a better education.  Immigration is also important because we want highly educated people here. People are only beginning to understand this.

This talk has tremendous implications for teaching and learning. Think about it...

Blogging in the 21st-Century Classroom | 21 century education | Scoop.it

This year, I admitted a hard truth to myself. I wasn't having my students write enough. In an attempt to follow Kelly Gallagher’s advice that students should write more than we can assess, I decided to have them blog weekly.

One Assignment, Many Objectives

After giving students some practice and solidifying my ideas by talking to a colleague and past student, I developed this assignment. I tried to ensure that the assignment would:

Address multiple Common Core standardsHold students accountable while minimizing stressBe structured enough to provide clarity while giving freedom to experimentBe varied enough to keep students engagedGet students to write for multiple purposes
Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

I love blogging and getting my students blogging too!  I have seen their writing flourish,  when they realise they are writing for a larger audience!  Their sense of humour, style and unique opinion comes to the fore!  Blogs are a wonderful way for young people to share their worldview!
