Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt explores the technologies that are likely to have the greatest disruptive impact on economies, business models, and people. Basically, all the grand challenges are being researched.
Firstly, the use of analytical tools in a historically analog world has tremendous implications for biology. How the genes work--how our brain is wired, etc. Three dimensional printing is also powerful. Another aspect is the idea of no user interface---the computer making suggestions for you. We're heading from a command and control era to one where your computer is more like a friend (with permission) who makes suggestions. There will be a symbotic relationship (we hope). Lastly, the media is not really following the big race--that of automation. What is happening to the low wage worker? What is the solution? Schmidt suggests a better education. Immigration is also important because we want highly educated people here. People are only beginning to understand this.
This talk has tremendous implications for teaching and learning. Think about it...

It takes a different approach and it is not for everyone. eLearning is part of a larger way of organizing what we learn and why we learn. It is a tool and needs to be used mindfully.
