Excellent substitutions with key healthy food tips.

 

#1 if you don't want to use Quinoa, you can substitute Buckwheat (which is a seed from the rhubarb/sorrel family) Buckwheat is rich in magnesium. It has many of the beneficial effects of whole grains without the gluten as does Quinoa.

 

#5 Make sure the Greek yogurt you buy is sugar free and add your own cut up fruit for a sweet taste. You can also make your own nut yogurt as well.

 

#7 Air popped popcorn is great. What about trying beet, kale, or sweet potato chips you make at home?

 

#8 You can substitute with Buckwheat flour, and Almond Flour also.

 

#11 You can substitute almost any green as in spinach, red leaf lettuce for iceberg which has basically no nutrients.

 

#15 replacing processed peanut butter with almond butter. You can also substitute organic tahini for the processed PB. Plus you can buy organic PB that is healthy.

 

#16 Make sure the coconut water you use is from coconuts. If you buy the branded coconut water in bottles or can, be alert that they all have added sugar.

Can't say enough about beans. Beans are definitely in the top healing foods category.

 

They make a great protein filled meal which has the second meal effect which describes how beans help to control blood sugar levels hours or even the next day after eating them. So eat more beans and less high glycemic foods like rice. Try eating beans with quinoa for a change. Beans are also high in fiber which help our gut bacteria do its job. 

 

Beans are loaded with good potassium and magnesium, two key minerals for your body.Plus beans are high in folate which protects memory.  Beans strengthen your immune system while reducing your risk for colon cancer and type 2 diabetes. Eat at least 3 cups weekly for best benefits.

Eating greens does change your health. Here's more interesting greens, some which may be new to some of you and some old favorites.

 

1. Seaweed

Loaded with vitamins and minerals and iodine, which is essential for a healthy thyroid, and is not found in too many foods. When deficient in iodine, one may have difficulty losing weight, feel fatigued, and perhaps depressed. You can cook seaweed or use powders in your cooking.

 

2. Microgreens is one of the new greens on the block.- mini versions which pack a nutritional punch. Just like sprouted broccoli and lentils, these mini plants have more vitamins and flavor than the mature plants. Choose from mustard, watercress, turnip, and sunflower, each a little different.

 

3. Kale - Lacinto and Dinosaur

1/4 cup honey
1 small orange (like a clementine)
